Hollywood's Year of Loss Remembering the Stars We Lost in 2025
From filmmakers to artists, Hollywood bid farewell to numerous notable figures throughout 2025.
The public learned on January 4th that director Jeff Baena, who was estranged from actress Aubrey Plaza, had passed away on January 3rd at 47 years old. According to official medical examiner reports obtained by Us Weekly, Baena's death was ruled a suicide.
“This profound loss is truly incomprehensible,” a representative for Plaza stated to Us on January 6, conveying the sentiments of the actress and her loved ones. “We extend our sincerest thanks to all who have reached out with kindness. We respectfully request space and discretion during this difficult period.” (It came to light on March 19 that Plaza and Baena had been living apart for four months when he passed.)
Just a few days following Baena's passing, manager Simon Jones announced the death of RuPaul’s Drag Race icon James Lee Williams, recognized professionally as The Vivienne, at the age of 32.
“James was a cherished, compassionate, and extraordinary individual,” the publicist conveyed via an Instagram message on January 5. “Their family is devastated by the passing of their beloved son, sibling, and uncle. They take immense pride in James's remarkable accomplishments throughout their life and professional journey. We will not be disclosing any additional information. We respectfully request that James's family be granted the necessary space and solitude to navigate their grief.”
The following day, officials verified that the popular drag performer's demise involved “no suspicious elements.” Williams’ family informed BBC News on March 17 that the television personality's death resulted from cardiac arrest, attributed to ketamine consumption.
