Home Improvement Star Zachery Ty Bryan's Tumultuous Journey From Sitcom Sweetheart to Legal Battles
Zachery Ty Bryan has encountered significant peaks and valleys throughout the years since rising to widespread recognition.
Bryan's initial breakthrough arrived when he was cast as Brad Taylor in the ABC sitcom Home Improvement. The program, which aired from 1991 to 1999, also featured Tim Allen, Patricia Richardson, Jonathan Taylor Thomas, and Taran Noah Smith.
While the sitcom was a triumph, Bryan found it challenging to navigate life beyond the spotlight.
“If you're a TV star today, you can get into any film you desire, but back then, it was entirely the opposite,” Bryan disclosed to The Hollywood Reporter in June 2023. “You were pigeonholed as a TV personality, and regardless of how strong your audition, you were never truly taken seriously. Nevertheless, I persisted.”

Bryan found it “exceptionally difficult” to establish consistency after Home Improvement concluded, adding, “Conversely, you might be rejected for many projects, but you could still go out at night and hang out with your friends at Mel’s Diner, and everyone would know who you are.”
After transitioning from acting to producing, Bryan was involved in works such as Prowl, Rogue River, and The Grief Tourist. His legal issues have overshadowed his career following Home Improvement.
In October 2020, Bryan was arrested on suspicion of strangling his partner, Johnnie Faye Cartwright. Us Weekly confirmed that Bryan accepted a plea agreement in the domestic violence case, agreeing to plead guilty to menacing and fourth-degree assault.
Bryan, who maintained his relationship with Cartwright, later asserted that the incident was “overblown.”
“We became very loud. We were yelling, and because we lived in a townhome with [thin walls], everyone could hear,” he conveyed to THR in June 2023, alleging that he and Cartwright “didn’t even get that physical” before his arrest. “Ultimately, [the police] pile on many charges because their main goal is for you to plead to something. I could have fought it — but that entails more stress and drama.”

While reflecting on his personal adversities, Bryan stated he viewed it all as a lesson. “I do recognize when things impede who you're meant to be, where you're supposed to go, and what God has planned for you,” he continued at that time. “He sometimes challenges you to engage in self-reflection by examining yourself and accepting responsibility.”
Bryan has since faced several additional charges for domestic violence and DUI, and was apprehended for a probation violation in 2025.

As part of the arrangement, prosecutors agreed to drop six other charges against him, including strangulation and coercion.

Bryan conveyed to THR that he was not “running a dubious scam” and claimed he was “in the same situation” as his investors. He also addressed his past arrests, which he labeled a “learning experience,” adding, “I am thankful for that. I navigated a circumstance that I am certain many people globally experience with their partners.”
He affirmed that he was still in a relationship with Cartwright, who at that time chose not to provide a statement.
