Homicide Inquiry Launched Into Rob Reiner and Wife's Deaths as Daughter Tracy Shares Grief

The daughter of Rob Reiner, Tracy Reiner, has released a statement following the discovery of the director and his wife, Michele Singer Reiner, who were found deceased at their residence on Sunday, December 14.

“I came from the greatest family ever,” Tracy, age 61, shared with NBC News. “I am at a loss for words. This is absolutely devastating.”

Tracy, adopted by Rob during his previous marriage to the late Penny Marshall, mentioned that she had recently spent time with her father at a family gathering just a day prior to his passing.

Reports emerged Sunday evening detailing the discovery of two deceased individuals — identified as a 78-year-old male and a 68-year-old female — within the Los Angeles residence belonging to Rob and his wife. TMZ initially stated that the Los Angeles Fire Department had responded to the location for "medical assistance" at approximately 3:30 p.m. local time.

While the victims' identities were initially withheld, their ages corresponded to those of Rob and Michele. A family representative subsequently verified the passing of Rob and Michele.

“We share this news with immense grief, announcing the tragic loss of Michele and Rob Reiner,” read a message shared with Variety. “Our hearts are broken by this unforeseen tragedy, and we request privacy during this extraordinarily challenging period.”

Us Weekly sought official statements from the Los Angeles Police Department.

During a Sunday press briefing, Deputy Chief Alan S. Hamilton verified that the LAPD “is actively pursuing a homicide inquiry regarding the two fatalities at Rob Reiner’s Brentwood residence.” Hamilton also mentioned that officials currently “have not pinpointed a suspect” and are not investigating any specific individuals as persons of interest.

Hamilton indicated that the pair sustained “visible stab wounds.”

In addition to Tracy, Rob and Michele were parents to three children: sons Jake and Nick Reiner and daughter Romy Reiner. The couple's marriage began in 1989.

The award-winning director's first marriage was to Marshall, lasting from 1971 to 1981. Even after their separation, they maintained a strong bond, and Rob joined numerous Hollywood figures in grieving Marshall’s passing in 2018.

He posted on social media at that time, stating, “So sad about Penny,” preceding a more extended remembrance.

He detailed, “I adored Penny. I shared my formative years with her. She possessed a remarkable talent from birth, endowed with a natural comedic sensibility and the intuition to apply it. I feel extremely fortunate to have shared my life with her and her humor. I will truly miss her presence.”

Marshall passed away at age 75 as a result of complications related to diabetes. Prior to this, she had received diagnoses of brain and lung cancer in 2009 before entering remission three years later in 2012.
