Jack White's Complex Love Life A Former Sibling Act
While Jack White holds a revered position among history's greatest guitarists today, there was a period when aspects of his private world were intricately woven into his public persona.
In 1997, Jack (whose birth name is John Anthony Gillis) established the rock duo The White Stripes alongside his spouse at the time, Meg White. However, during their initial years, the duo asserted they were siblings. Even subsequent to the revelation of their marriage — and their 2000 divorce — Jack maintained the narrative of their familial connection.
He ultimately clarified that he believed portraying a sibling bond would direct attention toward their musical output, diverting it from any romantic involvement they might share.
“Observing a two-member band comprising a husband and wife, or a boyfriend and girlfriend, typically elicits the thought, ‘Ah, I understand … ’ Conversely, when they are presented as brother and sister, the reaction is often, ‘Oh, how intriguing,’” he shared with Rolling Stone in 2005. “The emphasis then shifts to the artistry, not the dynamic between them — whether they are using the band to salvage their personal connection. Such considerations don't arise with siblings. They are bound for life; that is the essence of family ties.”
Following The White Stripes' ascent to prominence, Jack's romantic life saw connections with notable figures such as actress Renée Zellweger and supermodel Karen Elson. In 2022, he exchanged vows with musician Olivia Jean, an artist on Jack's own Third Man record label.

Meg White
Jack White encountered his initial spouse, Meg White, during his high school years in Detroit, Michigan. Their marriage took place on September 21, 1996, and they subsequently established The White Stripes the subsequent year. With the band's growing recognition, they informed reporters they were brother and sister, and Jack would present Meg on stage as his “big sister.”
Although Jack and Meg dissolved their marriage in 2000, they persevered in recording and performing as The White Stripes for multiple additional years. Their sixth and ultimate album, Icky Thump, was released in 2007, and their last live performance occurred that same year, preceding the official announcement of their separation in 2011. The group was honored with induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2025 by Iggy Pop, however, Meg was absent from the event.

In 2014, Jack disclosed to Rolling Stone that he “rarely ever” communicated with Meg, but he later retracted statements made in that same discussion suggesting her lack of support. Upon her 50th birthday in December 2024, Jack extended his felicitations through Instagram, stating, “A VERY HAPPY 50TH BIRTHDAY to my big sister, the magnificent Meg White. You are truly unique, Meggo; they certainly don't make them like you anymore. You continue to be a source of inspiration for many, myself included. Sending much love.”
Renee Zellweger
During the peak of The White Stripes' renown, Jack commenced a relationship with Renée Zellweger, having encountered her on the film set of Cold Mountain in 2003. Zellweger portrayed Ruby Thewes, subsequently earning an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress, whereas Jack held a smaller part as a character named Georgia and provided multiple tracks for the film's score.
The pair maintained their relationship for eighteen months prior to their separation in September 2004.
Karen Elson

They married merely a month later in a ceremony conducted within a canoe on the Amazon River, presided over by a shaman. Meg fulfilled the role of maid of honor.
After their nuptials, Elson and Jack became parents to two children: their daughter Scarlett, who arrived in 2006, and their son Henry, born in 2007.
In 2010, Elson launched her inaugural album, The Ghost Who Walks, which Jack both produced and issued through his Third Man imprint.

The subsequent year, the couple publicized their separation via a statement, announcing plans for a “divorce party” as a celebration, which they characterized as “a shared evening in Nashville to reconfirm our bond of friendship and commemorate both bygone days and forthcoming prospects with dear companions and relatives.”
In 2013, Elson secured a temporary restraining order against Jack, alleging harassment and “bullying” amidst their dispute concerning child custody. Jack refuted her claims in his legal document, which declared, “Mr. White does not wish to be depicted in a false light, as violent towards his wife and children.” Their divorce was concluded later that same year.
In October 2025, Elson and Jack collaborated on a TikTok video featuring Scarlett during her appearance on the runway for Paris Fashion Week.
Olivia Jean

The Black Belles disbanded the subsequent year, yet Jean proceeded to issue a solo record in 2014. Approximately at that juncture, Jean’s connection with Jack evolved into a romantic one.
