Jamie Lee Curtis and Christopher Guest Mourn the Tragic Loss of Rob and Michele Reiner.

Jamie Lee Curtis and her husband, Christopher Guest, are mourning the passing of director Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele Singer Reiner.

“Christopher and I feel numb, saddened, and shocked by the tragic, violent deaths of our cherished friends Rob and Michele Singer Reiner, and our sole priority and concern currently rests with their children and immediate families, to whom we intend to provide every possible support,” Curtis, aged 67, stated in remarks provided to Us Weekly on Monday, December 15.

The message proceeded, “A later time will allow for reflection on the creative careers we shared, as well as the significant political and social contributions they made to the entertainment sector, early childhood education, the campaign for marriage equality, and their worldwide efforts to aid a troubled world. We have suffered the loss of wonderful friends. We request privacy during this time of mourning.”

Guest, 77, collaborated on the writing and acted in the 1984 mockumentary This Is Spinal Tap, which served as Rob’s inaugural film as director. The duo worked together again on the follow-up film, Spinal Tap II: The End Continues, which premiered in September. Guest also appeared in several more of Rob’s movies, such as The Princess Bride in 1987 and A Few Good Men in 1992. Curtis, individually, acted alongside Reiner, portraying Joan and Bob, the parents of Zooey Deschanel‘s character Jess, on the sitcom New Girl.

Rob and Michele's bodies were discovered in their Brentwood, Los Angeles, residence on Sunday, December 14, bearing “apparent stab wounds,” according to the LAPD. Rob was 78 years old, and Michele was 68.

“It is with deep sadness that we confirm the tragic deaths of Michele and Rob Reiner,” a family representative informed Variety in a statement. “This abrupt loss has left us heartbroken, and we request privacy during this extraordinarily challenging period.”

At a press conference conducted on Sunday by Deputy Chief Alan S. Hamilton, the LAPD announced they were treating the deaths as homicides. Us Weekly verified on Monday, December 15, that Rob and Michele’s son Nick Reiner had been detained on a murder charge. Based on Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department records reviewed by Us, Nick, 32, is being held on a bond set at $4 million.

Besides Nick, Rob and Michele also have a son named Jake, 34, and a daughter named Romy, 28. (Rob also had an adopted daughter, Tracy, from his previous marriage to first wife Penny Marshall.)

After the shocking news of Rob and Michele’s deaths, Tracy, 61, spoke out.

“I had the most incredible family,” she informed NBC News on Sunday. “I’m at a loss for words. I am completely stunned.”

Numerous colleagues and acquaintances of Rob from the entertainment industry shared their condolences on social media.

“This is a terrible loss. Rob Reiner ranked among my preferred directors. He created films that significantly shaped my generation,” Ben Stiller posted in a tribute on X on Monday. “He emerged from under the immense comedic legacy of the brilliant Carl Reiner and transitioned from a television actor into a superb director responsible for an extraordinary string of films. Spinal Tap stands as one of the finest comedies ever produced, with many other achievements following. He was a compassionate and considerate individual who possessed remarkable humor. I did not know him intimately, but I always admired his work, and I feel genuine sorrow for those close to him and his family.”

Stephen King expressed his grief over the filmmaker's passing in a post on X on Monday, stating, “I am appalled and distressed by the deaths of Rob Reiner and Michele. A wonderful friend, political supporter, and exceptional filmmaker (who adapted two of my books). May you rest in peace, Rob. You were always there for me.”
