Jamie Lee Curtis Defends Her Remarks on Charlie Kirk Amidst Misinterpretation

Jamie Lee Curtis has spoken out after facing “intimidating” criticism stemming from her heartfelt comments regarding the passing of Charlie Kirk.

“A segment of my statement was incorrectly interpreted as if I was offering him good wishes — as if I was speaking about him in an entirely favorable light, which was not my intention,” the 66-year-old Curtis explained to Variety in an interview released on Tuesday, October 28. “My remarks were purely about his spiritual conviction. Therefore, it was a misinterpretation, which is a play on words, yet factual.”

The acclaimed performer elaborated that contemporary society is a “dichotomous world,” making it impossible to “entertain opposing concepts simultaneously.” Curtis observed that individuals are often “condemned for possessing a perspective” that embraces two potentially conflicting ideas.

“I don't feel the need to be guarded,” Curtis stated, notwithstanding her prominent public profile. “Had I been cautious, I would not have shared any of what I just revealed to you.”

She proceeded, “I would have merely offered, ‘Hello, welcome. I’ve prepared some banana bread for you. This is my dog. This is my home, et cetera. What would you like to inquire about?’ I am unable to refrain from being my authentic self at any given moment.”

The conversation with Variety took place the day following Curtis’s guest appearance on Marc Maron’s “WTF” podcast in the previous month. During their discussion, Curtis mentioned Kirk’s passing.

“I want to mention something that's currently on my mind. Charlie Crist passed away two days ago,” she stated during the podcast episode from September 15. “My apologies, Kirk. I seem to call him Crist, I believe, due to 'Christ,' because of his profound spiritual conviction.”

Upon the initial emergence of her remarks, numerous social media users were perplexed by what seemed like an endorsement from Curtis, given Kirk’s public opposition to the transgender community. It is noteworthy that Curtis’s daughter, Ruby, is a trans woman.

Curtis admitted to differing with Kirk on “nearly every statement I ever heard him utter,” yet she wished to address his profound religiosity.

“I consider him to have been a person of deep spiritual belief, and my wish is that at the instant of his passing, he experienced a profound link to his faith,” she went on, visibly moved. “Despite the fact that I find his doctrines repugnant to me, I nonetheless recognize him as a father, a husband, and a man of faith, and I hope that whatever ‘communion with God’ entails, he encountered it.”

Kirk passed away at 31 years old after sustaining fatal gunshot wounds during an engagement at Utah Valley University on September 10. Law enforcement apprehended Tyler Robinson, identifying him as Kirk’s suspected assailant, on September 12. Robinson remains incarcerated at the Utah County Jail without bond.

Footage depicting Kirk’s shooting has been widely shared across social media platforms since the event. Curtis expressed on the “WTF” podcast that “we lack understanding of the long-term consequences” of repeatedly witnessing Kirk’s “killing continuously” online.

“We have become desensitized to these images, yet they remain imprinted within us,” Curtis added. “We are unaware; we don't possess sufficient psychological insight into the ramifications of such exposure. What impact does that truly have?”
