Jason Bateman says distance from sister Justine is positive for their relationship.
Jason Bateman is not the sole performer among his relatives.
Jason’s parents, Kent Bateman, a film producer and director, and Victoria Bateman, a flight attendant, first had his older sister, Justine Bateman, in February 1966; Jason then joined the family in January 1969.
During her adolescence, Justine appeared in the sitcom Family Ties between 1982 and 1989. Concurrently, Jason began acting at only 10 years old, securing parts in Little House on the Prairie and The Hogan Family.
“My mother worked as a Pan Am flight attendant, and my father was a freelance writer, director, and producer; however, my parents managed my career and earned more from that role than from their original professions,” Jason shared during a February 2025 appearance on the “Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend” podcast. “Fifteen percent of my earnings at that stage turned out to be greater than their combined income from their careers.”

With his parents serving as his managers and his sister involved in the entertainment industry, the situation eventually created some family strain. In adulthood, Jason and Justine admit they “don’t see each other frequently.”
“We don't have the standard 'We gather every Thanksgiving or Christmas, and our children want to socialize together’ scenario,” Jason clarified in a December 2025 interview with Esquire. “That type of dynamic doesn’t exist. … This is actually positive.”

Kent Bateman and Victoria Bateman
Kent and Victoria were married in 1965, having Justine in 1966 and Jason in 1969. Kent, born in October 1946 in Salt Lake City, Utah, worked as a film producer for Ealing Films during the late 1960s and 1970s. Victoria was a flight attendant for Pan Am, which is no longer operating.
Once Justine began acting in Family Ties during her teen years, Kent and Victoria took on management duties for both her and Jason, who was 10 at the time — a situation that led to some family conflict.
“It turned into a crucial element,” Bateman remarked on a February 2025 episode of the “Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend” podcast, explaining that his parents earned more managing than from their individual jobs. “We resided in a specific apartment that would have been unaffordable if they relied solely on their professional incomes.”

Jason mentioned experiencing significant pressure to keep up high academic performance in order to renew his work permit twice yearly.
“The stress of midterms and finals annually was huge for me, since they accounted for 60% of the grade,” Bateman clarified, noting his fear that “failing my midterm meant losing my work permit, which meant getting removed from the show, which would cause everyone on the show to lose their jobs and us to lose our residence.”
Kent and Victoria separated in 1989. Based on Kent’s IMDB profile, he later married Elaine Marie Eaton in 1990, although they divorced in 2006. (Kent also had two children with Elaine, in addition to one child from a prior marriage to Barbara Jane Lowenthal.)
Justine Bateman
Justine was born to Kent and Victoria in February 1966. As a teenager, she started acting in the sitcom Family Ties, which ran from 1982 to 1989. Justine subsequently appeared in various shows, such as Men Behaving Badly, Men in Trees, Still Standing, Californication, and Desperate Housewives. Her notable film work includes 1988’s Satisfaction, 2006’s The TV Set, and 2021’s Violet, a project she also wrote, directed, and produced.
Beyond her work in cinema, Justine wrote two books: Fame: The Hijacking of Reality (2018) and Face: One Square Foot of Skin (2021).
Justine tied the knot with financier Mark Fluent in 2001. Their son Duke was born in 2002, followed by their daughter Gianetta in 2004.
Who Is Justine Bateman? Key Facts About Jason Bateman's Sister
Over the years, Justine and Jason have mostly avoided discussing their connection publicly, though Jason did comment in 2015 that their relationship was “healthy.”
“We should strive to achieve the kind of relationship adults typically have,” Jason stated during the “WTF With Marc Maron” podcast in 2015. “You aren’t bound by blood; you must earn the connection.”
While Jason indicated that he and Justine live within a mile of each other and coexist well, their immediate families do not have a strong connection.
“I could fulfill my roles better as an uncle, brother, and son, Marc,” Jason admitted then.
Almost ten years afterward, Justine seemed to dismiss rumors regarding a conflict between herself and Jason.
“If anyone mentions my brother to me for reasons other than complimenting his new show or previous projects, I will mute them at minimum or block them entirely,” she posted on X in September 2025. “I have no interest in your fabricated scenarios about some supposed feud between us concerning your political beliefs. Honestly, it’s disturbing.”

Two months following Justine’s remarks, Jason mentioned that he and Justine “do not visit frequently” these days, clarifying that they no longer gather for “every Thanksgiving or every Christmas.”
“That doesn’t happen. … This is actually positive,” he stated in a December 2025 interview with Esquire. “Our discussions resemble the substantive talks one might have with an adult friend, rather than the irritable exchanges often seen with grown siblings. We socialize and treat each other kindly because we appreciate one another as distinct individuals, separate from the familial connection. I’m scheduled to have lunch with her next week.”
Amanda Anka
Jason first met his wife, Amanda Anka, at a Los Angeles Kings hockey game in 1987 when they were both teenagers; however, they did not begin dating until ten years later.
“I wasn’t interested in his state of mind at the time,” Anka — who has appeared in projects including Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Lost Highway, Taxi, and The Morning Show, where she is also a co-producer — told GQ in March 2013.
The daughter of well-known Canadian vocalist Paul Anka married Jason in 2001, following a four-year relationship. The pair had their daughter Francesca in October 2006, and their daughter Maple in February 2012.
Although the couple has maintained a fairly private relationship over time, Jason has periodically expressed public admiration for his wife.
“She maintains a full-time career while also being a full-time mother, and she practically functions as a full-time father as well,” Jason informed Us Weekly at the SAG Awards in January 2019. “I am simply amazed by this. It helps keep me grounded. It serves as a strong example for me to aspire to.”
