Jay Leno Finds Fulfillment in Caring for Wife Mavis Through Dementia

Comedian Jay Leno has offered unwavering support to his wife, Mavis Leno, as she leans on him during her struggle with dementia.

“It feels right because she genuinely requires my presence now, and I find fulfillment in that. I can sense her gratitude,” the 75-year-old Jay shared in a conversation broadcast on the November 20th installment of Today. “When you exchange marital vows, one rarely anticipates having to fully embody them, right? The 'for better or worse' clause. Yet, even the 'worse' aspects aren't as difficult as one might imagine.”

The public learned of Mavis’ advanced dementia diagnosis in early 2024, followed by Jay obtaining conservatorship of her assets a few months afterward. Reflecting on his role as Mavis's caregiver for the past two years, Jay mentioned a particular morning routine she developed, the 79-year-old.

“Without a doubt, the most challenging aspect was her daily awakening to the fresh news that her mother had passed,” Jay recounted. “Her mother essentially passed away anew each day for around three years. It wasn't merely tears; she was processing the news as if for the very first time. Every instance was — genuinely difficult. Yes, that made things arduous.”

Despite Mavis’ health struggles, Jay shared that his wife’s desire for food has “significantly returned,” though they no longer dine out at eateries.

“I long for the days I could — bring her out for meals and engage in similar activities, but it’s not truly feasible anymore,” he explained. “We arrange for assistance, take her for car rides, observe scenery, and she enjoys those outings.”

Jay mentioned that Mavis had a fondness for travel in the past, but her ability to do so is now limited.

“Consequently, it saddens me that she can no longer partake in those activities,” he conveyed. “However, as you know, there's a wealth of content on YouTube, like travel documentaries, and we watch those, along with nature programs and similar things.”

Although Mavis presently recognizes Jay, the previous late-night personality acknowledged the possibility that she might eventually lose recollection of him.

“I grasp the nature of the condition, so I don’t — one cannot hold it against someone. She isn't forgetting me, you see. That particular stage hasn't arrived. She appears very — I mean, she seems exceptionally at ease currently,” he stated. “And she looks happy, and she seems peaceful. It's actually fine. It's positive. You know, I find joy in looking after her.”

Jay has also made an effort to maintain an optimistic demeanor when with his wife.

“You know, when I’m assisting her — for instance, helping her to the restroom, we do this and I affectionately dub it 'Jay and Mavis at the prom,' reminiscent of high school days, you know,” he recounted. “So, we just playfully sway. And she finds that amusing.”

When questioned about how Mavis expresses her affection for him, Jay responded, “Simply by vocalizing it.”

“You know, her smile is visible to me,” he added. “I can discern when she’s content. And when she gazes at me, smiles, and declares her love, honestly, my heart melts.”
