JD and Usha first encountered each other while attending Yale Law School, where they both participated in a discussion group focused on “social decline in white America.”
Usha mentioned in a 2017 interview with NBC News that she and JD shared all their courses and were friends prior to commencing their romantic relationship.
Her admiration for his dedication grew when they were tasked with collaborating on a legal brief.

2014

Within the memoir, JD recounted the period when he became deeply smitten with Usha during their time at Yale. He characterized her as a “genetic anomaly” due to her multitude of desirable traits.
He also confessed to having “disregarded all conventions of contemporary dating” by declaring his love for her after their initial date.

Vance and Usha celebrated the birth of their first child, son Ewan, in June 2017. Their family expanded with a second son, Vivek, in February 2020, followed by their daughter Mirabel in December 2021.

During the 2024 presidential campaign, Usha participated in her inaugural solo interview with Fox News.
In the conversation, the presumptive second lady was queried about her husband’s 2021 comment suggesting the United States was governed by “childless cat ladies.”
“The truth is, JD … uttered a lighthearted comment to underscore a significant point he aimed to convey,” she stated. “His underlying message was that parenting in this nation can be exceptionally challenging, and occasionally, our policies are structured to exacerbate these difficulties.”
January 2025
JD and Usha marked their relocation to the White House with a customary celebration.

Usha ignited speculation of marital discord when she was seen without her wedding band during an outing to Camp Lejeune in November 2025. A representative for the Vances clarified that Usha is “a parent of three small children, who performs numerous chores, provides many baths, and occasionally misplaces her ring.”
This incident occurred weeks following Erika Kirk’s embrace of JD Vance at a public engagement, where she remarked on the Vice President’s “resemblances” to her deceased spouse.
December 2025
The Vice President spoke on whispers of marital strife during a December 2025 conversation with NBC News. He maintained that their bond is “stronger than ever” and, regarding the rumors, commented, “I believe we find them somewhat amusing.”
“In all aspects of life, one must accept the positive alongside the negative,” he further added. “You recognize that certain sacrifices are required, yet significant benefits also arise. However, our marital union is more robust than it has ever been, and I believe Usha has truly adapted to this, and it’s been rather fascinating to observe her growth and transformation in this new capacity.”
