Jennifer Lawrence Rehomed Family Dog Due to Postpartum Safety Concerns

Jennifer Lawrence made the difficult decision to find a new home for her cherished dog to ensure the safety of her family.

“Honestly, after having a child, our dogs started to seem quite frightening, you know?” Lawrence, 35, shared during a discussion about her film Die My Love at New York City’s 92Y on Wednesday, January 7. “It’s almost, like, I don’t recognize dogs right now. I simply see them as a potential danger.”

She continued, “One of them nipped my son, and that made me want to get rid of the dog.”

Lawrence has been married to her husband, Cooke Maroney, since 2019, three years before welcoming son Cy.

Jennifer Lawrence Details Her Struggle With ‘Intrusive’ Postpartum Depression

“My capacity for love has expanded to a degree I didn’t know was possible. I include my husband in that feeling. And then they’re both just, like, out there — walking around, crossing streets,” the Oscar winner said about motherhood in a 2022 interview with Vogue. “He’s going to drive one day. He’s going to be a typical teenager behind the wheel of a car. And I’m just going to say, ‘Goodbye!’ You know? Like, how can anyone sleep?”

She elaborated, “The day after I gave birth, I felt as though my entire life had begun anew. It felt like, Now is the first day of my life. I simply stared. I was overwhelmingly in love. I also fell in love with all babies everywhere. Newborns are simply so wonderful. They’re these pink, swollen, delicate little survivors.”

After Lawrence returned to work following Cy’s birth, she experienced “mom guilt.”

“Every day of being a mom, I feel terrible,” she told Variety in June 2022. “I feel guilty. I’m playing with him and I’m thinking, ‘Is this what he truly wants to be doing? Should we be outdoors?’ We’re outside [and I’m thinking], ‘What if he’s cold? What if he gets sick? Should we be inside? Is this enough? Is this stimulating his brain sufficiently?’”

Jennifer Lawrence Says the World Isn't 'Designed' for Working Parents

Us Weekly confirmed two years later in October 2024 that Lawrence and Maroney, 41, were expecting another child. They welcomed baby No. 2 last year, keeping details about their infant’s birth and name private.

During her pregnancy, Lawrence also filmed Die My Love opposite Robert Pattinson.

“A portion of what she’s going through is the hormonal shifts that come with postpartum, but she’s also grappling with an identity crisis. ‘Who am I as a mother? Who am I as a wife? Who am I as a sexual person to my husband? Who am I as a creative?’” Lawrence said during a Cannes Film Festival press conference in May 2025. “I believe, she’s struggling with this feeling that she’s disappearing.”

According to the actress, she deeply connected with her Die My Love character.

“For me, I was four-and-a-half, five months pregnant when we shot, I had wonderful hormones,” she recalled. “I was feeling fantastic, which was truly the only way I could access some of this raw emotion. As a mother, it was really difficult to separate what I would do versus what she would do, and it was just heartbreaking.”

As Lawrence and Maroney raise their two children, they also adopted a pet cat after giving up their family dog.

“I have a cat,” she added on Wednesday. “I feel like they’re so misunderstood because they are mischievous and people who dislike cats don’t understand that is what is so amusing.”
