Jennifer Lopez Reflects on Ben Affleck Divorce as Life Altering Growth Experience

Jennifer Lopez shared insights into how her separation from Ben Affleck profoundly changed her life.

During a CBS Sunday Morning interview, broadcast on the network's YouTube channel on Sunday, September 28, the 56-year-old Lopez discussed the 53-year-old Affleck after interviewer Lee Cowan pointed out Affleck's role as a producer on her forthcoming movie, Kiss of the Spider Woman.

“That film would not have come to fruition without his involvement and Artists Equity. I will forever acknowledge his contribution,” Lopez stated, referring to the production company helmed by Affleck and Matt Damon, then elaborated on the complexities of working on set with Affleck while their marriage was faltering.

“It was challenging to compartmentalize, but it truly felt like a period of extremes, both wonderful and difficult. While filming … I felt immense joy. Yet … returning home, things were far from ideal,” Lopez clarified. “However, you persevere, and honestly, I must admit, it turned out to be the most beneficial experience for me because it transformed me. It facilitated a personal evolution I desperately needed … fostering greater self-awareness. I am a changed individual compared to who I was a year ago.”

Lopez, who tied the knot with Affleck in 2022, initiated divorce proceedings against the actor in August 2024, with the acclaimed singer citing April 26, 2024, as the date of their formal separation. The dissolution of their marriage concluded in January.

Cowan, 60, observed during their recent conversation that Lopez appeared to be “in a positive state … content and self-assured,” notwithstanding a challenging year and a half — a sentiment Lopez confirmed.

“This past summer was likely the most fulfilling I’ve ever experienced. I find myself appreciating moments more fully,” she elaborated. “I came to understand that happiness lies in existence … and truly accepting life with all its offerings. Difficult periods serve as learning experiences, and one must grasp that concept. I believe that had that [the divorce] not occurred, I would lack that understanding.”

Us Weekly disclosed privileged information regarding Lopez and Affleck’s union in May 2024, citing an anonymous source who stated the couple was “experiencing difficulties” during that period. “Their perspectives are fundamentally misaligned more often than not,” the insider informed Us.

Following the finalization of their divorce, Affleck addressed his past relationship in an open conversation with GQ magazine. “There's a natural inclination to dissect separations and pinpoint exact reasons. But truthfully … the reality is far more commonplace than most would imagine or find compelling,” he conveyed to the publication in the interview, released in March. “There isn’t any scandal, dramatic narrative, or mystery [surrounding our divorce]. The fact is, when you ask someone, ‘What transpired?’ there isn’t a definitive, ‘This is precisely what happened.’”
