Jets Legend Nick Mangold Remembered for Family Devotion After Kidney Disease Battle
The late NFL luminary Nick Mangold was known for his devotion to his family prior to his untimely passing on October 25, resulting from kidney disease complications. He was 41 years old.
Just weeks before his premature demise, Mangold had informed his followers of his urgent need for a kidney transplant, indicating his critical health condition.
“Sharing this message isn't easy, but I feel it's important to be transparent about my current health situation,” Mangold wrote on Instagram on October 14. “Back in 2006, I received a diagnosis of a genetic condition that has progressed into chronic kidney disease. Following a challenging summer, I am now undergoing dialysis while we search for a suitable kidney donor. I always knew this moment would arrive, but I genuinely believed I had more time.”
His passing, officially announced on October 26, deeply affected the NFL community as an outpouring of sympathy emerged for the former New York Jets athlete.

“Nick represented far more than just an outstanding center,” Jets Chairman Woody Johnson stated in a press release. “He embodied the spirit of our offensive line for a decade and was a cherished teammate whose leadership and resilience characterized an important era for Jets football. Beyond the field, Nick’s sharp wit, inherent kindness, and steadfast loyalty made him a beloved member of our wider Jets family.”
“It’s heartbreaking. Such an exceptional young man,” Rex Ryan, who served as Mangold's coach for six seasons, commented on the same day. “I had the privilege of coaching him for six years with the Jets.
He went on to say: “[Mangold] was remarkable, and far too young to leave us. My heart goes out to his wife and family.”
Beyond his achievements as a two-time All-Pro NFL player, Mangold was a devoted spouse and a parent to four young children.
Mangold and his spouse, Jennifer, are parents to four children: their son Matthew, daughter Eloise, son Thomas, and daughter Charlotte.
