Jilly Cooper the legendary bonkbuster author has died aged 88

Esteemed UK writer Jilly Cooper passed away at 88 following an accidental fall — her children expressed profound surprise at her unexpected passing.

The cherished author, known for popular romantic fiction such as Rivals, Riders, and Polo, departed this life on the morning of Sunday, October 5, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Felix and Emily, Cooper's son and daughter, issued a heartfelt communiqué acknowledging the somber announcement. “Our mother illuminated every aspect of her existence,” their message read. “Her affection for everyone in her family and circle of friends was limitless. Her sudden demise has left us utterly stunned. We take immense pride in her life's accomplishments and cannot fathom living without her contagious grin and joyful presence surrounding us.”

For many years, Cooper's agent, Felicity Blunt, commented: “It has been the greatest honor of my professional life to collaborate with a woman who has shaped cultural trends, literary discourse, and public discussion since her initial publication more than half a century ago. Jilly's legacy will unquestionably be most associated with her bestselling The Rutshire Chronicles series and its charming, chaotic show-jumping protagonist, Rupert Campbell-Black. While novels dubbed 'bonkbusters' might not typically be expected to endure so powerfully, Jilly penned her stories with keen perception and deep understanding of universal themes — social strata, intimacy, matrimony, competition, sorrow, and procreation.”

Blunt further stated: “Her narratives were both complex and daring, punctuated by shrewd insights and playful wit. She frequently drew upon her personal experiences for creative impetus, and her analyses of societal prejudices and conventions bore a striking resemblance to Jane Austen's style. Yet, if one attempted to offer her this praise, or any commendation, she would dismiss it humbly. She claimed her writing's sole purpose was 'to contribute to the overall joy of humanity'. In this particular aspect of her craft, she was, and continues to be, peerless.”

Cooper's birth took place in 1937 in Essex, England. Following an initial foray into journalism, her pivotal opportunity arose from an incidental discussion at a dinner gathering with the editor of The Sunday Times magazine. She subsequently took on the role of a relationships columnist prior to releasing her debut book, How To Stay Married, in 1969.

She wed Leo Cooper in 1961; he too was involved in the publishing industry and passed away in 2013 at 79 years old. Beyond their two children, they were also grandparents to five.

In her most recent endeavor, Cooper acted as executive producer for the acclaimed Disney+ series based on her renowned novel, Rivals. “Her input on narrative and dialogue consistently deepened and enhanced the screenplays, and her presence on set brought delight to both the cast and crew," Blunt remarked. "Possessing keen emotional insight, immense generosity, acute observational skills, and boundless cheer, Jilly Cooper will be profoundly mourned by everyone at Curtis Brown and involved with the production of Rivals. I have lost a companion, a supporter, a trusted advisor, and a guide. However, I am certain her legacy will endure perpetually through the narratives she crafted for both print and visual media.”

Those close to Cooper are currently organizing a public commemorative service to honor her life at Southwark Cathedral in London.
