Jodie Sweetin Recalls First Drunken Blackout at Age 14

Actress Jodie Sweetin is candidly discussing what she describes as her initial encounter with alcoholic beverages.

During the November 21st episode of the “Skinny Confidential” podcast, Sweetin, now 43, disclosed, “My very first time consuming alcohol was around age 14 … at my former costar Candace Cameron Bure’s wedding, and I consumed so much I blacked out.”

She elaborated that the incident “was terrible, unsightly, and deeply shameful,” adding, “My mother was absolutely appalled.”

She recounted, “I was seated at a table, drinking, and my mother was across the room from me,” explaining that her alcohol consumption wasn't immediately apparent to the adults nearby. “They would fill a wine glass … and then, as they circulated to pour more, I would request, ‘I’ll have a bit more, please.’”

While conceding she was “mortified the following day” and “felt dreadful,” Sweetin mentioned that the incident also sparked a realization within her.

She recalled thinking, “Wow, that was enjoyable,” proceeding to clarify that this event marked the beginning of her extensive partying habits.

“By about age 15 or 16, I recognized that my drinking and partying style differed significantly from my friends,” she further stated, “who would comment, ‘Seriously? Calm down.’” She added, “I would then feel compelled to seek out others with whom I could use these substances.” Or, as she put it, it involved “locating individuals who wouldn’t judge my behavior as harshly.”

Sweetin has previously spoken candidly about her struggle with addiction.

In a March 2016 exclusive with Us Weekly, she shared, “Everyone grapples with their personal struggles. When we finally manage to release them, we gain the ability to truly live and experience freedom. Reflecting on past events and contrasting them with my current situation is astounding. If anything, my journey stands as a testament to perseverance.”

Beyond alcohol, she also grappled with the use of ecstasy, crystal methamphetamine, and cocaine.

Speaking with her Dancing With the Stars partner, Keo Motsepe, during an April 2016 episode, Sweetin explained, “It marked a massive change in my life. Everything familiar to me since age five abruptly concluded, akin to bidding farewell to a beloved family. Being so young, it represented a profound loss I didn't know how to process. Drugs and alcohol served to dull all feelings.”

Sweetin further elaborated: “I was consuming cocaine, ecstasy, alcohol, and various other substances. My lowest points weren't necessarily ending up hospitalized or similar incidents. Rather, they were those solitary, quiet moments where I detested the person I had evolved into.”

In October 2009, she informed Us that “I achieved lasting sobriety on December 7, 2008. I was en route to L.A., and consumed a significant amount of Nyquil along with a large quantity of alcohol.” She continued, “Upon my return, I received a call about an urgent custody investigation triggered by my drinking. From that point, I fully committed to attending [Alcoholics Anonymous] meetings and steered clear of individuals who used drugs openly. … My life is positive. I feel a level of happiness I haven't experienced in recent memory.”
