John Legend's Iconic Stage Name Was Once Johnny Legend's Trademark
The stage name of John Legend wasn't initially so iconic. Indeed, a formal agreement was necessary to gain permission to utilize his widely recognized professional identity.
“J. [Ivy] listened to me performing, playing instruments, and everything else I contributed to those College Dropout songs [alongside Kanye West], and he was quite taken with it,” Legend, 46, recounted about his early musical journey in Amazon’s Word+Music documentary series, as reported by People. “He declared, ‘Dude, we absolutely have to dub you the legend.’”
Stephens, born John, shortly thereafter resolved to adopt his recently acquired epithet for his career.
“The choice of whether to embrace this professional pseudonym was mine to make,” he remembered sharing in the documentary. “A part of my mind was questioning, ‘How can you entitle yourself Legend? You haven't even secured a recording contract.’”

Legend opted to pursue it, understanding that this professional title would “capture public interest.”
“Subsequently, I simply had to strive to meet its expectations,” he stated. “And, to my astonishment, there was a producer of adult films — I'm being serious — an adult film producer who also explored rockabilly tunes, and he used the name Johnny Legend. The circumstance that he created music, specifically rockabilly, and shared the name Johnny Legend, suggested a potential issue with trademark violation.”
Consequently, the current father of four children was required to seek permission from Johnny (whose birth name is Martin Margulies), now 77, to use the moniker “John Legend” in his performances.
“We had to locate Johnny Legend, engage in discussions, and finalize an agreement establishing that he was Johnny Legend, and I was John Legend,” the artist behind “All of Me” explained. “[It was settled that] he would not file a lawsuit against me, I would not file a lawsuit against him [and] he would not attempt to enter the soul music industry by impersonating John Legend.”
He went on to say, “I was pleased to confirm that I upheld my part of the bargain. I neither produced any adult entertainment nor created any rockabilly tracks while claiming to be Johnny Legend.”

The EGOT recipient secured his initial recording contract in 2004, launching his debut album in the same year on the occasion of his 26th birthday. From that point onward, Legend has garnered remarkable musical achievements and honors.
“It feels somewhat dreamlike. It was never a consideration of mine when I began my profession,” Legend expressed to Entertainment Tonight regarding his achievement of an Oscar, Emmy, Grammy, and Tony Award, thereby entering the exclusive circle. “I likely aimed to secure a few Grammys and achieve significant record sales, and those things began to materialize quite rapidly, yet I never imagined I would reach this point, earning an Emmy, and belonging to that distinguished cohort of individuals who have claimed all four of these prominent [recognitions].”
Beyond his flourishing professional life, Legend has cultivated a harmonious relationship with his spouse, Chrissy Teigen.
“We have navigated every challenge as a unit,” Legend revealed exclusively to Us Weekly in September, explaining the insights into his 12-year union. “I believe that understanding we offer mutual backing and stand by each other through thick and thin is — well, when that forms your bedrock, it signifies everything.”
Legend and Teigen, 40, are the progenitors of daughters Luna, 9, and Esti, 2, in addition to sons Miles, 7, and Wren, 2.
The debut of Word+Music is scheduled for MGM+ on Sunday, November 30.
