John Mayer Shares Heartfelt Tribute After Losing Beloved Dog Moose

John Mayer is mourning the loss of his beloved canine companion, Moose, after 14 years together.

“We said goodbye to Moose yesterday,” the 48-year-old musician shared on Instagram on Saturday, December 6. “He came into my life when I needed pure love, and that’s exactly what he provided for 14 years.”

He continued, “We exchanged that affection, along with something else I now understand was crucial: routine. For a person like me who left home at 19 and never experienced two identical days, our established routine brought genuine solace and structure. When supper is consistently served at 8, and afternoon walks occur at 4:30, such patterns possess the power to mend your spirit. And they accomplished precisely that, repeatedly.”

The “Your Body is a Wonderland” vocalist also posted a collection of pictures highlighting the deceased canine, tenderly documenting the duo's connection over a period exceeding ten years.

“Today my heart feels tremendously heavy and painful, yet my life contains more affection than ever before, which I attribute to Moose guiding me toward it,” he elaborated in the message. “It won't be long before I discover an old tennis ball – there must be a hundred hidden beneath twigs and brush that were too difficult to retrieve – and when I stumble upon one, I will throw it, reflecting on the canine companion I had as I matured, how exceptional he was, and how time is always insufficient. But love is sufficient. It's more than enough.”

The photo series starts with a current picture of Moose before switching to an image of the dog as a pup. Mayer additionally incorporated various shots of himself and Moose side-by-side, including one where a long-haired Mayer holds the young dog close, and another, more recent photo capturing the pair engaged in play with a tennis ball.

Mayer's followers might remember that Moose was featured on the artwork for the singer-songwriter's sixth studio album, Paradise Valley, released in 2013. The album cover portrayed Mayer, wearing a hat and long coat, standing alongside Moose in a field.

During a 2017 discussion with Bobby Bones, Mayer disclosed that he faced a predicament upon realizing his dog was not fond of concerts.

“My dog doesn't reside in Montana. This is how the situation unfolded. I adopted a dog; my intention was to bring a companion on tour. A road dog. A close friend of mine coincidentally happens to be an exceptional dog trainer,” he stated, admitting the challenge of dog ownership while consistently touring. “She took my dog. She trained him thoroughly. She molded him into a perfectly behaved animal.”

He explained further, “And then I thought, alright, I'll take my dog on tour. The dog despises music. He really dislikes music. He perceives it as thunder. As a result, he was shaking in the dressing room. The very first night — I believe Red Rocks was the inaugural venue where we said, 'Okay, I have a dog, let's try this.' He was trembling in the corner.”

The musician noted that Moose’s dislike of music seemed to encompass even casual guitar playing at home.

“When he is at home with me, if I grab a guitar, plug it in, and begin to perform, he displays the most amusing behavior,” he recounted. “He attempts not to upset me. He slowly slides his two front paws off the sofa and simply strolls out of the space.”

Ultimately, Mayer and his friend established a shared care arrangement that ensured Moose's comfort, permitting Mayer to retrieve his dog during breaks from touring.

“Therefore, it wasn't a sustainable situation, but my dog trainer grew so fond of him that she offered, 'He's become part of our family as well, so I'll be the primary caregiver,'” he clarified. “I found that wonderful. My dog leads a superior existence to mine. He resides in Brentwood, California. I'll pick him up — it resembles extended doggie daycare, lasting for months.”
