John Stamos and Lori Loughlin: The Full House Stars' Enduring Friendship Beyond the Screen
John Stamos and Lori Loughlin portrayed an iconic television duo, and their bond behind the cameras has been equally charming.
Stamos and Loughlin first met before their tenure on Full House, sharing a Disneyland outing as young adults. Although a romance didn't materialize back then, their paths crossed again when they became co-stars on Full House. Stamos took on the role of Uncle Jesse, with Loughlin cast as his romantic partner, Aunt Becky.
A romantic relationship never developed between Loughlin and Stamos because the actress was married to her first husband, Michael Burns. Loughlin and Burns' marriage lasted from 1989 until 1996. In the subsequent year, Loughlin began a relationship with Mossimo Giannulli. Stamos, meanwhile, was wed to Rebecca Romijn from 1998 to 2005, prior to marrying Caitlin McHugh.
“Our timing was certainly mismatched,” Stamos remarked in a 2013 interview with the Huffington Post. “However, with all due respect to her current family and husband, I would suggest she might be the one who slipped away.”

The Reason a Relationship Never Materialized
In a 2013 discussion with the Huffington Post, Loughlin shared insights into why she and Stamos never pursued a real-life romance.
“We were close friends … and we shared a natural chemistry. I was actually married when I was working on the series, and then I divorced, and once I was divorced, he met Rebecca and got married,” she recounted. “Consequently, our timing was simply misaligned, so I don't believe it ever truly crossed our minds that our bond could evolve into anything more.”
In the same year, Stamos told the publication that Loughlin was “the one who escaped him.”
“She is among my closest friends, and that suffices,” he admitted. “Yet, I truly hold deep affection for her.”
Upon learning of Stamos’ comments, Loughlin informed Yahoo’s Daily Shot that it “was exceptionally kind of him to express that.”
Absent from His Nuptials
As Loughlin was unable to attend Stamos’ marriage to McHugh owing to a prior professional engagement, she revealed exclusively to Us Weekly that she dispatched a thoughtful gift to the joyous pair.
“I sent floral arrangements and was quite disappointed that I already had other arrangements,” she shared with Us. “Nevertheless, I am incredibly pleased for John. I'm overjoyed that he's becoming a father; he will be a wonderful dad. He has always had a knack with children. And Caitlin is simply an amazing woman; she is perfect for him. I am glad to witness him finally discovering true love.”
Mutual Support Through Life's Journey
Within Stamos’ 2023 autobiography, If You Would Have Told Me, the performer discussed his deep connection with Loughlin.
“She is my Sandra Dee from Grease, the virtuous woman with a compassionate spirit who consistently lifts my mood in her presence,” he penned. “She stands among the select few women I've spent extensive time with, yet I invariably anticipate our next encounter. I understand her humor, we have an innate understanding, and our bond embodies the kind of genuine friendship that should underpin a significant, enduring partnership.”
Stamos expressed that Loughlin has served as a “valued companion” throughout his existence, as they each navigated challenging periods.
“We have endured adversities collectively and provided mutual support, notwithstanding life‘s obstacles. We have witnessed each other at our lowest,” he wrote. “I have observed instances where surrendering might have offered Lori the simplest escape. She could have deflected responsibility and allowed her family, marriage, and life to collapse. Yet, she did not. Regardless of the severity of the blow, or how eager everyone was to condemn her and group her with notorious offenders, she remained steadfast, shielding her daughters from the relentless accusations flung at them.”
Standing By Her Side
A month following the announcement of Loughlin’s separation from Giannulli, Stamos publicly affirmed his backing for his enduring friend.
“I have known her for four decades,” Stamos stated during an October 2025 installment of the “Good Guys” podcast. “One can discern a person's true nature after several years. This woman is truly virtuous. My heart simply aches for her at this moment.”
Stamos furthermore openly expressed his opinions regarding Giannulli, attributing to him the responsibility for their joint participation in the college admissions controversy.
“I made a genuine effort to support her throughout this period and concerning the college scandal … I won't engage in a discussion about her extent of involvement,” he remarked. “I am certain she had none.”
