Jordan and Boseman Honored on Remarkable Day
Michael B. Jordan and his cherished, departed friend Chadwick Boseman each achieved distinct yet equally significant career recognitions on a remarkable day.
Thursday, November 20, saw Boseman honored posthumously with a star on the illustrious Hollywood Walk of Fame, concurrently with Jordan being presented with the prestigious American Cinematheque Award later that very night.
“It was truly extraordinary. How could such a perfect alignment have been orchestrated? To commence the day by revering and celebrating Chadwick Boseman, and then to receive my own accolade on that identical day,” the 38-year-old Jordan expressed to Access Hollywood on Thursday. “I genuinely couldn't envision sharing this moment with anyone else.”
The bond between Boseman and Jordan blossomed following their collaborative work in the 2018 Marvel blockbuster Black Panther. Subsequent to his role in the acclaimed superhero feature, Boseman received a diagnosis of colon cancer, engaging in a private four-year struggle with the disease until his passing in August 2020, at the age of 43.

The star of Sinners conveyed to the publication his profound sense of “humility and thankfulness” at being honored by individuals he deeply admires.
Earlier on the same day, Jordan was present at Boseman’s Walk of Fame inauguration, joined by esteemed figures such as Viola Davis, Letitia Wright, and Walt Disney Co. CEO Bob Iger. Chadwick’s wife, Simone Ledward-Boseman, delivered a poignant eulogy for her deceased spouse.
“During his lifetime, Chad embodied more than just an actor, or indeed, an artist,” Simone shared with the attendees. “He was a mentor for the soul, strengthened by a loving family and intimate friends who anchored him in his beliefs; a dedicated team that championed him, safeguarded him, and advocated on his behalf. Fellow professionals who had faith in his outlook, who elevated him, and who cultivated genuine camaraderie: you cannot fathom the immense significance of those interactions.”
Simone further remarked that Chadwick was not merely an accomplished performer but also an exemplary figure whom countless individuals admired.
“We acknowledge your exceptional talent and unwavering commitment, and we solidify your enduring impact as both a hero and an emblem,” she proceeded. “You conducted your life with integrity, and you journeyed with authenticity. Your brilliance was matched only by your beauty and your benevolence. We hold you in our hearts, we long for your presence, we express our gratitude.”
The director of Black Panther, Ryan Coogler, likewise delivered a poignant address.
“This is a sentiment that those who perhaps played ice hockey alongside Wayne Gretzky can confirm, and individuals who played basketball with Michael Jordan can validate: there exists an extraordinary quality in being in such proximity to someone of that caliber,” the 39-year-old Coogler conveyed in his speech, visibly emotional. “You become aware of your own shortcomings, yet simultaneously grasp the immense potential of the human spirit. Chad exemplified this constantly.”

This occasion was not the initial instance of Chadwick being celebrated following his demise. Several months after his passing, the performer garnered a posthumous Academy Award nomination for portraying Levee Green in Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom in 2021, though Chadwick was ultimately bested by Anthony Hopkins for his performance in The Father.
Jordan has maintained Chadwick’s remembrance through various means. Earlier this year, Jordan disclosed how his departed companion influenced his approach to embodying his role in Sinners.
“I recall during an early camera test, while I was still discovering the nuances of the characters, Coog recalled to me how Chad approached T’Challa [in Black Panther] — how profoundly he immersed himself in that role and personified it throughout the filming,” Jordan recounted in an April discussion with The New York Times. “I responded, ‘Consider it done,’ and from that point forward, my portrayal was executed with that same philosophy.”
