Kate McKinnon Reveals Quirky Medical Condition and DIY Passions
Kate McKinnon is sharing details about a somewhat uncommon, yet fortunately harmless, medical condition she has.
“I snapped a picture of my tongue and shared it with an actor colleague,” the 41-year-old former Saturday Night Live star revealed to People in a conversation released on Saturday, September 6.
“We share the identical health issue,” she added. “It's known as geographic tongue. This condition causes your tongue to lose its surface cells in distinct areas, resembling a map, which explains the 'geographic tongue' moniker.”
The Cleveland Clinic states that geographic tongue is a “benign disorder characterized by smooth, red areas on your tongue.” An individual might possess this condition without any noticeable discomfort, as per the health institution, and it doesn't lead to health complications nor does it necessitate medical intervention.

Nevertheless, even though her medical state poses no real danger, McKinnon confesses she isn't entirely pleased with discovering her condition.
“It’s a bit unsightly,” the performer and humorist informed the outlet. “We sometimes boast about the extent of our tongue's 'geography' on any particular day. Perhaps I ought not to be discussing this in a widely read publication.”
Discussing her rather obscure medical issue isn't the sole activity the Roses actress is choosing to occupy her hours with. Since departing SNL in 2022 and subsequently appearing in a number of hit films, such as the 2023 smash hit Barbie, McKinnon has been diligently honing her fermentation techniques.
“One can lacto-ferment any vegetable by placing them in a large, clean jar, covering them with water, then weighing the entire contents, deducting the jar's weight, multiplying the result by .035, and then incorporating that specific quantity of salt (by weight), shaking it thoroughly, and allowing it to rest for a week,” she explained to the publication during the same Saturday conversation. “I’ve been experimenting with fermentation. Aziza was my inspiration!”
McKinnon has also been showcasing her do-it-yourself talents, installing what she referred to as “imitation beams” on the “ceiling of her sleeping quarters.”
“I acquired the timber, then cut it, oiled it, applied bug treatment, fitted it, and rectified it, a process that consumed three years,” she detailed. “However, the expertise I acquired will be beneficial indefinitely. I appreciate practical abilities.”
Regarding her health, possessing a harmless — and rather peculiar — medical condition places McKinnon in what could be considered an exclusive group among her fellow Hollywood figures. In a 2008 segment on Friday Night With Jonathan Ross, actor Ashton Kutcher disclosed that he possesses syndactyly, or webbed toes.

“I have a pair of toes that are fused, or webbed. This became a major news story? … They are simply slightly joined. It's beneficial to share this information widely,” he clarified then. “I heard about a particular child who had webbed toes and considered himself unusual, but then he saw that I possess them as well, and it apparently solidified his belief that he was, in fact, abnormal.”
He continued, “I assumed all toes were like that. It’s actually possible to sever the connection at birth. Typically, people’s toes are connected and then separate; mine simply never fully did.”
Denzel Washington, meanwhile, possesses a bent little finger, whereas Jennifer Garner experiences brachymetatarsia, a congenital foot anomaly where her smallest toe overlaps with the adjacent digit.
