Kate Middleton Champions Compassion in Addiction Awareness Week Plea

Princess Kate Middleton has issued a fervent appeal, urging an end to the pervasive “stigma” associated with addiction.

The Princess of Wales observed the U.K.'s Addiction Awareness Week, an initiative running from Sunday, November 23, to Saturday, November 29, by releasing a statement advocating for increased compassion towards individuals on their recovery journeys.

Kate, aged 43, released this significant statement on Monday, November 24, fulfilling her duties as royal patron of the Forward Trust, a prominent social justice charity dedicated to assisting individuals across the U.K. in overcoming addiction.

“During this Addiction Awareness Week, I am, as ever, profoundly honored to offer my backing to this immensely vital campaign,” she commenced her earnest appeal. “In my capacity as Patron of the Forward Trust, it has been profoundly moving to witness the remarkable strides made in deepening our understanding of addiction and actively confronting its pervasive stigma. However, a considerable amount of work still lies ahead.”

“Addiction is neither a deliberate decision nor a character flaw, but rather an intricate mental health challenge that demands a response of compassion and assistance,” Kate continued. “Yet, even now in 2025, the reality of addiction for many is defined by apprehension, disgrace, and condemnation. This prevailing perception unequivocally needs to shift.”

The statement elaborated, “The societal stigma encircling individuals grappling with addiction unfortunately permits it to flourish in secrecy, devastating families, communities, and ultimately destroying individual lives. A significant number of us will undoubtedly know someone contending with this struggle. The time has come to extend our empathy and affection to empower them, or their loved ones, to seek assistance from vital organizations such as the Forward Trust.”

“The path to recovery is arduous, but with appropriate therapeutic interventions, it is indeed achievable. This journey commences with open dialogue, an empathetic ear, and demonstrating genuine concern,” Kate penned.

She concluded her statement, “Therefore, I urge you to engage in this crucial dialogue. By openly discussing it, together we possess the power to illuminate addiction and its detrimental effects, bringing them out of obscurity. We can redefine this challenge through the lenses of compassion and comprehension, ensuring individuals and families navigating addiction understand unequivocally that they are not isolated.”

Kate has served as royal patron for the Forward Trust since June 2021. Prior to this, she formerly held the patronage of Action on Addiction, an organization that amalgamated with the Forward Trust in May 2021.

The royal also recently addressed “the frequently overlooked aspects of mental health during pregnancy and the postnatal period” in a letter released by the U.K. charity Maternal Mental Health Alliance (MMHA) on November 4, written to champion the organization’s new exhibition, “This Is Also Motherhood.”

“The Maternal Mental Health Alliance persists in advocating for the experiences of those navigating perinatal mental health challenges,” Kate affirmed. “Central to this evocative display are ten extraordinary women. Their courageous decision to speak openly about their journeys, whether characterized by trauma, joy, or fortitude, powerfully illustrates the profound fragility and intrinsic strength of the human spirit. Through their poignant portraits and heartfelt letters, they serve as a powerful reminder that no individual should ever have to traverse the perinatal journey in isolation.”

“‘This is Also Motherhood’ underscores the potential for recovery from perinatal mental health problems. Each parent’s narrative holds significance, and every voice possesses the capacity to contribute to the creation of a society where love, hope, and compassion are fundamental to all our endeavors,” further stated the royal, who shares three children — Prince George, aged 12, Princess Charlotte, aged 10, and Prince Louis, aged 7 — with her husband, Prince William.
