Kate's Teasing Secret: How the Princess of Wales Jabs Prince William About His Hair
Catherine, Princess of Wales, reportedly enjoys playfully teasing her spouse, Prince William, particularly regarding his receding hairline.
In his forthcoming memoir, The Royal Butler: My Remarkable Life of Royal Service, Grant Harrold, who previously served the royals, recounted a discussion he had with Kate and William, both aged 43, concerning the subject of aging.
Harrold remembers that the three of them were gathered in the kitchen of the royal residence at Highgrove in Gloucestershire when the topic of hair loss arose during their conversation, as detailed in the book due out later this month.
“I suggested that the most challenging aspect of growing old must certainly be experiencing hair loss and becoming bald,” Harrold penned, as revealed in an exclusive excerpt acquired by Us Weekly. “Kate began to chuckle quietly, and William cast a glance my way before remarking, ‘Thanks for that.’ It hadn't crossed my mind that, naturally, he was already experiencing hair thinning at that point.”
Former Royal Aide Offers Different Perspective on Prince Harry's Accounts of Charles and Camilla
Harrold observed that a running gag existed within the household, cautioning against drawing attention to William’s "thinning spot." Nevertheless, the Prince of Wales handled such remarks with grace.
“He consistently received any remarks, whether intentional or not, with a good-natured attitude,” Harrold further stated.
Harrold reiterated this specific anecdote during an interview with People magazine, which was published on Tuesday, September 2.
"I stated, 'From a male perspective, the most challenging part is when you begin to lose your hair and develop baldness,'” Harrold recounted. "Kate began to giggle, and I glanced towards William, who responded, ‘Thanks, Grant!’ and then tilted his head forward to display his hair."
Harrold remembered Prince William playfully retaliating shortly thereafter. The ex-butler mentioned that a self-tanning incident on his part provided amusement.
“William inquired, ‘What have you done? Is it all over?’ and upon confirmation, he reiterated, ‘All over?’ I confirmed it was 'all over.' He then asked, ‘May I see it?’” Harrold described. “I was compelled to remove my footwear and hosiery to reveal my toes, which were distinctly orange!"
Ex-Royal Staff Member Shares Memories of Prince Harry’s Bond with Kate Middleton
Harrold documented his seven years of service to the royal family within his forthcoming memoir. During his conversation with People, the former butler expressed his appreciation for having worked with both William and Prince Harry.
“Accounts circulate about their mother [Princess Diana] entering the kitchens, perching on the counters, and engaging in conversations,” he commented. “What was endearing about her sons was their similar demeanor."
Harrold stated that King Charles III, Kate, William, and Harry consistently expressed gratitude to staff. He characterized the family as always being “appreciative” of those who assisted them.
“They consistently sought you out to convey their thanks for your efforts," he remembered.
The Royal Butler: My Remarkable Life of Royal Service is scheduled for publication on Tuesday, September 23.
