Kathy Bates Credits Rob Reiner for Transforming Her Career

Kathy Bates became deeply emotional while reflecting on how the late director Rob Reiner enabled her to achieve a long-held ambition.

“Rob fundamentally altered my life’s trajectory, and without his involvement, I wouldn’t be in this position speaking with you today,” Bates, 77, stated on CBS News: Rob Reiner — Scenes From a Life on Sunday, December 21.

The actress portrayed the character of Annie Wilkes, a devoted but obsessive admirer, in Reiner’s 1990 psychological thriller, Misery, alongside James Caan, who played the role of Paul Sheldon, a celebrated author. Reiner first noticed Bates performing on stage, but their significant interaction occurred during her memorable audition for Misery, which was adapted from the 1987 Stephen King novel of the same name.

“I distinctly remember entering his office, and we explored a few different interpretations of the character, some gentler, others more unhinged, and after a short time, he declared, ‘I don’t need to see anything else; you have the part. I am confident you can deliver.’” Bates recounted. “I recall the genuine warmth he exuded, his enthusiasm, and his belief in my ability to embody Annie. He was certain I would excel.”

How Rob Reiner’s Relationship With Wife Michele Influenced ‘When Harry Met Sally’

Bates’ portrayal was so exceptional that she received the Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Motion Picture – Drama and the Oscar for Best Actress. Reiner was present at the 1991 Academy Awards, enthusiastically supporting Bates as she delivered her acceptance speech.

“The moment my name was announced, I glanced over and saw Rob standing and vigorously clapping, shouting, ‘Yes, yes, yes!’ I was speaking with my former spouse [Tony Campisi] recently, as he was seated beside me that night, and he told me that I had already begun walking towards the stage when Rob, something I was unaware of until just the other night, turned to him and exclaimed, ‘She was phenomenal! She was the best!’ Hearing that meant so much to me because my goal was to impress him,” Bates shared, visibly moved.

Bates shared that she and Reiner later inquired with King, 78, about his opinion of the film adaptation.

“He remarked, ‘I hadn’t anticipated her lifting her skirt and spinning around,’” Bates remembered. “However, that was Rob’s vision. With a different director, the film might have lacked the same comedic timing or emotional depth, or it certainly wouldn’t have created such a complex and relatable character.”

For Bates, Misery represented a pivotal role that transformed her life in multiple ways.

“I came to the understanding that if I hadn’t taken on the role in Misery, it would have been akin to George Bailey contemplating what his life would have been like had he never existed,” Bates explained, referencing James Stewart’s character in It’s a Wonderful Life. “I’ve always aspired to be an actress, and without Rob, I don’t believe I would have been able to realize that dream in such a profound and remarkable manner.”

Bates was among numerous celebrities who contributed to the CBS special honoring Rob and his wife, Michele Singer Reiner, following their deaths at their home in Brentwood, California, on December 14. They were 78 and 70 years old, respectively. Their son Nick Reiner was arrested and faces two counts of first-degree murder related to his parents’ deaths, potentially resulting in a life sentence without parole or the death penalty if found guilty. Nick has not yet formally responded to the charges, and a court date is scheduled for January 7, 2026.
