Katie Thurston Navigates Stage Four Breast Cancer Journey with Resilience and Hope
Katie Thurston received a diagnosis of breast cancer in February 2025 when she was 34 years old.
“There was a small growth in my breast, positioned roughly at the 10 o’clock mark,” the ex-Bachelorette shared on her Instagram Stories during the same month. “I found it myself. Initially, I considered it might be related to my menstrual cycle or perhaps muscle fatigue from exercise. However, the lump persisted and did not resolve.”
Following this, Thurston sought medical attention, where a mammogram revealed the existence of malignant cells. To understand the specific nature of the cancer, she then had a biopsy.
“Positive update! My cancer has not spread,” Thurston announced on her Instagram Stories on February 21, 2025, clarifying that the cancerous cells were contained within her lymph nodes. “I have two final appointments in Los Angeles before my official relocation to New York City on March 1st. The expected sequence of treatments includes fertility preservation (egg/embryo freezing), followed by chemotherapy, and then surgery.”

Before beginning her cancer therapy, Thurston relocated to New York City alongside her spouse, Jeff Arcuri. (Thurston and the stand-up comedian became engaged in late 2024 and exchanged vows in March 2025.)
“I am incredibly grateful for my family, friends, and the support network here for assisting me in reaching my current mental state,” she further stated. “Presently, I feel composed, less apprehensive, and prepared.”
A comprehensive chronology of Thurston’s journey with cancer is provided below:
November 2024
Late in 2024, Thurston detected a mass in her breast, later mentioning on her Instagram Stories in February that the discomfort persisted for “three or four months.”
“My initial lump [which was a harmless cyst] had the sensation of a pea or a marble, feeling firm and anomalous, yet it caused no pain. The subsequent one felt bigger,” she recounted in February 2025. “The discomfort was intermittent at first, but after it failed to subside or improve for perhaps three to four months, I became concerned and consulted my physician.”
She underwent a breast ultrasound, a mammogram, and several biopsies, which collectively confirmed the cancerous finding.
February 2025
Thurston received her diagnosis just prior to Valentine’s Day, sharing the information with the public a few hours later.
“Yesterday, I observed all the couples sharing their Valentine’s Day festivities. To be frank, I felt a pang of envy. Jeff had taken me to Hawaii, and afterward, we had plans to explore the world before finally settling down in NYC,” she posted on Instagram on February 15. “However, my Valentine’s Day was instead dedicated to arranging accommodations because I must return to Los Angeles for additional tests and therapy.”
She further stated, “I spent my morning clarifying insurance details for NYC and regulations concerning pre-existing conditions. I booked appointments for an additional biopsy, fertility counseling, mental health support, surgery, and a meeting with my medical team to discuss the comprehensive treatment strategy, which will involve chemotherapy.”

Thurston underwent another biopsy on February 19, this time targeting her lymph nodes.
“Biopsy completed. It was a significantly improved experience this time,” Thurston posted on her Instagram Stories. “I took lorazepam, communicated my difficulties from the previous appointment, requested more local anesthetic, and they permitted Jeff to be present, holding my hand.”
The results of this biopsy showed that Thurston’s cancer had not spread beyond its current locations.
March 2025
Early in the month, Thurston permanently relocated to New York City prior to beginning fertility treatments. The television personality chose to preserve embryos before commencing chemotherapy.
“There’s a time when you believe you don’t desire children,” she penned on March 9. “Then, you encounter the person you’ve always dreamed of and would go to any length to ensure we can establish a family down the line.”
Throughout March, Thurston persisted in organizing her medical regimen.
“I decided to participate in the I-Spy breast cancer trial rather than pursuing conventional treatment,” she stated on March 13. “The objective is to tailor therapies to patients based on the molecular and genetic traits of their tumors, moving beyond a universal approach. This entails undergoing additional tests beforehand and throughout the trial.”
On the same day, she attended an optometry appointment to “have her vision examined” to verify her eligibility for the I-Spy clinical trial. The following day, Thurston completed an egg retrieval procedure.
Merely days after Us Weekly exclusively reported that Thurston and Arcuri exchanged vows on March 22, several lesions were identified on the ex-Bachelorette’s liver. Subsequently, Thurston had biopsies performed on her breast, lymph nodes, and liver to determine when to initiate her treatment. A port was also surgically inserted.
On March 28, Thurston verified that the areas detected on her liver were malignant.
“Following several days of anticipation, I regrettably learned today that my breast cancer has disseminated to my liver,” she conveyed in an Instagram video. “While the growth is relatively small, it nonetheless advances my diagnosis to stage four.”
Thurston announced that her treatment would commence the subsequent week.
April 2025
On April 3, as Thurston was preparing her hospital bag to begin chemotherapy the following day, her doctors contacted her to halt her arrangements.
“I received a phone call informing me that my pathology results for my liver, breast, and lymph nodes all came back as HER2 Negative, despite my initial samples at Kaiser having been HER2+,” Thurston posted on Instagram on April 4. “I was moments away from taking my steroid medication in preparation for chemotherapy. Instead, I am going to my doctor to discuss how this occurred, what further tests are required, and the implications for my revised treatment strategy. It appears chemotherapy is no longer part of the plan for now.”
She verified on April 10 that her cancer was HER2-negative. “This signifies no chemotherapy,” she clarified on her Instagram Story, before detailing her updated treatment approach.
“My primary course of treatment will instead involve Letrozole + Kisqali + Zoladex,” she stated. “This personalized regimen is designed for HER2-negative, Luminal B, hormone-positive breast cancer. Letrozole is used to inhibit estrogen, Kisqali to impede the growth of cancer cells, and Zoladex to suppress ovarian function.”
Nevertheless, chemotherapy is “not entirely ruled out,” she explained, noting, “Should this current treatment cease to be effective or if the cancer recurs, it remains an alternative we will reconsider. We will rigorously supervise the treatment plan to ensure its efficacy for my body.”
On April 12, Thurston elaborated on her treatment schedule, mentioning she would have “monthly” consultations to “monitor my cardiac health and perform blood tests.” She also noted, “I anticipate my first scan from this point will be in three months.”
June 2025
On June 1, Thurston announced on Instagram that she had completed her second month of therapy and observed several bodily changes.
“Currently, after two months on my medication, my hair is shedding in an unusually large quantity of clumps. Addressing that,” she commented. “My memory is fading. That’s wonderful. Passing through customs, and they asked, ‘Where are you traveling from?’ And I gazed at him and replied, ‘I can’t recall. I genuinely can’t recall.’”
Thurston detailed that she is making “significant choices” regarding her liver treatment, considering options like radiation, ablation, or histotripsy — the latter of which she indicated she would pursue with NYU. She noted that Zoladex was ineffective, resulting in the return of her menstrual cycle. Thurston explained she is transitioning to Lupron, and if that also fails, she mentioned the possibility of needing an oophorectomy (removal of her ovaries).
Several weeks later, Thurston openly discussed the financial burden of her continuing treatment. She posted a screenshot of an insurance claim on her Instagram Story, which indicated that her medical providers had charged $320,325.57, while her personal out-of-pocket expense amounted to $22,420.40.
“Gratitude to the brands I have the chance to collaborate with and to everyone who supports me,” Thurston penned. “A special mention to the $1300 I contribute monthly toward my medical expenses, which I will incur for the remainder of my life as a stage 4 patient.”
July 2025
Following a holiday in Greece with her spouse, Thurston came back home for her “quarterly scan review.”
“We will discover if the tumors are stable (not growing) or potentially even regressing! Provided my scans yield positive results, I can proceed with this current treatment strategy,” she communicated on her Instagram Story then. “As a stage 4 patient, I will be on a lifelong treatment regimen, so it’s a triumph when a therapy proves effective. This also underscores the critical importance of funding for breast cancer research, as some of us eventually exhaust our treatment options.”
September 2025
Thurston provided an update regarding her therapy plans. After some scan results were deemed “somewhat worrying,” her physician reduced her medication dosage from three pills to two daily.
“That adjustment has positively impacted my liver enzymes, meaning I do not have to halt my therapy; I can proceed with my treatment,” she stated in a July 2025 Instagram video. “The more significant assessment of this treatment’s effectiveness will come next month when I undergo another scan to ascertain the extent of tumor reduction.”
Should her subsequent series of scans show favorable results, Thurston will be eligible to have a double mastectomy in November.
