Katie Thurston Slams Death Rumors Amid Breast Cancer Battle

Reality TV personality Katie Thurston, known from The Bachelorette, has addressed rumors circulating online concerning her well-being while she continues to fight breast cancer.

“My intention was to step back from social media, but then I started receiving messages from individuals I don't typically communicate with,” the 34-year-old Thurston revealed in a poignant Instagram Story video uploaded on Friday, September 26. “Subsequently, I received direct messages from many asking, ‘Are you alright?’”

She further expressed, “While I've encountered this type of content previously, something about this evening genuinely infuriates me. It's incredibly distressing, and despite my attempts to flag it, I find myself unable to take action and feel utterly powerless. I am incredibly upset at this moment. If anyone employed by Facebook has advice on how I can proceed, I urge you to inform me.”

Several online profiles have recently disseminated a fabricated death notice for Thurston, erroneously asserting her passing after a year-long battle with breast cancer.

A Chronology of Katie Thurston's Journey with Breast Cancer

“I am still alive. Facebook is simply a perpetual source of deceptive content,” Thurston stated in a subsequent Instagram Story post on Friday. “Kindly report these individuals. Their actions are deplorable! This is deeply upsetting.”

Thurston received her breast cancer diagnosis in February, a month prior to her wedding to current husband Jeff Arcuri. The former reality star's cancer metastasized to her liver in March, advancing her condition to stage IV.

“I wished to provide an update on my current phase as an individual living with and managing stage IV breast cancer,” Thurston commented in an online video uploaded on September 19. “What many do not grasp about stage IV is that I will require lifelong medication. It resembles a continuous management strategy, which is beneficial yet simultaneously daunting.”

As per Thurston, the malignant lesions on her liver seemed to have “vanished spontaneously.” Should her forthcoming scans show no abnormalities, Thurston plans to move forward with scheduling a double mastectomy. (A double mastectomy involves the surgical removal of all breast tissue from both breasts to address bilateral breast cancer, as stated by the Cleveland Clinic.)

“My double mastectomy is scheduled for November,” she announced earlier in the month. “Current treatments are proving effective, and we are adapting accordingly.”

Katie Thurston Discusses Her Mindset Approaching Stage 4 Cancer Treatment

Thurston, whose family has no prior incidence of breast cancer, first detected a mass in one breast through a personal examination.

“I found a small lump in my breast, positioned roughly at the 10 o'clock mark. I located it independently,” she shared on her Instagram Stories in February. “I initially considered it might be related to my menstrual cycle or muscle discomfort from exercise. However, the lump persisted over time.”

Thurston added, “My initial thought was premenstrual syndrome or exercise-induced soreness. … My previous lump, which was a benign cyst, felt like a pea or marble—firm and abnormal, yet caused no pain. This subsequent lump felt larger. While the pain was initially intermittent, after about three to four months of it neither resolving nor getting better, I became concerned and consulted my physician.”

Following a breast ultrasound, a mammogram, and several biopsies, Thurston’s medical professional confirmed her cancer diagnosis.
