Katy Perry's Coronation Stay Sparked Royal Uproar Demands
According to royal insider Robert Jobson, Katy Perry reportedly created quite a commotion within the monarchy following her performance at King Charles III’s coronation ceremony in May 2023.
In his forthcoming book, The Windsor Legacy, due out next year, Jobson detailed the opulent Coronation Concert, featuring numerous celebrities, held the day after Charles' formal ascension to the throne. (The then 77-year-old monarch assumed the crown directly after his mother, Queen Elizabeth II, passed away in September 2022.)
“Lionel Richie illuminated the stage with his popular tracks ‘Easy’ and ‘All Night Long,’ demonstrating his immense appeal,” Jobson penned in an exclusive preview secured by Us Weekly. “Katy Perry shined brightly in a shimmering gold dress, performing her popular songs ‘Roar’ and ‘Firework’ for an enthusiastic crowd of 20,000, and even encouraged Princess Charlotte to join in the singing. The evening combined established customs with modern extravagance, with Hugh Bonneville as host and additional renowned artists such as Andrea Bocelli enhancing the grand event.”
Jobson claims the supposed conflict arose when Perry, aged 41, learned that Richie, aged 76, would be granted preferential treatment.
King Charles III’s Coronation: The Debates and Disputes Associated with the Event
“Lionel Richie, an associate of the Prince’s Trust, was extended an invitation to reside at Windsor Castle following the performance, which led Katy Perry and her entourage to insist on similar arrangements,” Jobson asserted. “Ultimately, the senior palace officials conceded, yet Perry’s group created a disturbance by celebrating until the early hours and venturing into off-limits zones.”
Us Weekly has contacted both the palace and Perry to solicit their statements.
Ahead of the coronation, Perry expressed her excitement about performing for the monarch.
“I’m thankful for the opportunity to attend,” she informed Entertainment Tonight in April 2023, prior to detailing her relationship with the sovereign. “I encountered the future King several years ago, and he appointed me as an ambassador for his charity, The British Asian Trust, a body dedicated to combating child trafficking. I also serve as an ambassador for UNICEF, and this role truly resonated with my personal principles. My primary reason for attending is to fulfill my ambassadorial duties and to represent, ‘Hello, I’m here from the United States.’ No, but it’s truly remarkable.”
On May 6, 2023, during the coronation service itself, Perry became a viral sensation after being filmed searching for her assigned seat and appearing to seek help. A few days later, she dismissed the humorous comments.
“Indeed, I simply want everyone to understand, I truly appreciate your worry,” she joked during an interview with Entertainment Tonight. “My seat was located.”
She further stated, “You see, the memes are proliferating, and I quite enjoy it. If you maintain a certain expression for just 15 seconds, suddenly the internet assumes control.”
Lionel! The First Lady! Celebrities Present at King Charles III's Coronation Ceremony
In a February 2024 appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, Perry verified that she and her mother lodged at Windsor Castle throughout the coronation festivities. On one occasion, she and her styling team literally bumped into Charles and Queen Camilla as they attempted to rendezvous for an American Idol segment.
“Everyone was in a hurry,” she recounted, clarifying that her group was meant to follow specific, pre-planned paths through the royal residence. “I collided directly with them, and my reaction was, ‘Oh, I took an incorrect turn!’”
