Kellie Pickler's legal battle with late husband's parents intensifies over personal belongings
More than a year after the passing of Kellie Pickler’s husband, Kyle Jacobs, who died by suicide, the country music star finds herself in a legal dispute with his parents.
“A disagreement has emerged among the parties concerning certain personal belongings allegedly in [Kyle’s] possession before his death,” state court documents filed in August 2024 and later obtained by Us Weekly.
Pickler claims that Jacobs’ parents, Reed and Sharon, created a “List of Assets” and subsequently issued a subpoena compelling the singer to surrender the items. Pickler has since stated that she does not possess some of these particular items.
Pickler and Jacobs began their relationship in 2008, tying the knot three years later. They remained together until his death in 2023.

How Did Kyle Jacobs Die?
Reports surfaced in February 2023 confirming that Jacobs had taken his own life at the age of 49. He was discovered by local law enforcement officers inside the couple’s Nashville residence.
A subsequent toxicology report revealed that no illicit substances were found in Jacobs’ system at the time of his passing.

Pickler spoke publicly about Jacobs’ death five months later, releasing an official statement.
“One of the profound lessons my husband imparted to me was that in moments of crisis, if you are unsure what to do, ‘do nothing, just be still.’ I have chosen to abide by his counsel,” she shared in August 2023. “I extend my gratitude to my family, friends, and supporters for the countless letters, calls, and messages I’ve received. It has profoundly moved me and is helping me navigate the most challenging period of my life. As many of you have expressed to me, you are all in my thoughts and prayers.”

Jacobs’ parents, who serve as the co-administrators of his estate, had allegedly demanded that Pickler turn over specific personal effects that belonged to their son. In her formal legal filing, the American Idol alum asserted that she does not own these items.
Reed and Sharon specifically sought Jacobs’ firearm collection, watches and jewelry, baseball cards, musical instruments, and any personal electronic devices. According to Pickler, her in-laws seemingly removed certain belongings from her home without her consent.
“In connection with this action, Ms. Pickler is requesting a court order compelling the co-administrators to identify the items they retrieved from her residence,” Pickler’s legal documents state.
How Have Kyle Jacobs’ Parents Reacted to the Legal Claims?
Reed and Sharon contested Pickler’s assertions in their own petition, filed in November 2024 and obtained by Us, contending that they retrieved the items “at the explicit invitation” of Pickler and her legal counsel. Her attorneys were reportedly present to “discuss the transfer of items belonging to the estate.”
Reed and Sharon also sought the dismissal of Pickler’s motion, arguing that their claim to property ownership is consistent with the prenuptial agreement Pickler and Jacobs signed upon their marriage in 2011.

Pickler was subsequently granted a protective order, which prohibits either party from publicly disclosing transcripts or videos from court proceedings to prevent “annoyance, embarrassment, oppression, or undue burden or expense.”
Reed and Sharon, however, opposed this order.
Kyle Jacobs’ Parents File New Subpoena
Us Weekly confirmed in April 2025 that Reed and Sharon issued a subpoena to Harpeth Memorial Gardens Funeral Home & Cremation Center, requesting details regarding his funeral and cremation. They are also seeking communications between the funeral home and Pickler.
The funeral home has reportedly declined to comply with the request and has not submitted an objection.
The following month, Us confirmed that Reed and Sharon issued additional subpoenas, alleging that Pickler has attempted to reverse prior probate proceedings in the two years since Kyle’s passing.
“For nearly the entire duration of this case, she has maintained that undisclosed agreements exist between the parties, which are so sensitive and confidential that they should remain unnamed and their terms hidden from any public record,” Reed and Sharon argued, referring to Pickler’s persistent requests to seal court documents. “It is inevitable in any legal action that information otherwise unknown to the general public may be revealed, but a purely subjective desire for absolute secrecy is insufficient to meet the substantial burden of proof required to justify sealing judicial records.”
Us exclusively reported in November 2025 that a judge ruled in favor of Pickler, nullifying Reed and Sharon’s subpoena. In the decision, the judge determined that the paperwork had been incorrectly filed.
“The court is uncertain about [Reed and Sharon’s] expectations concerning the subpoena. It appears that [Reed and Sharon] might have anticipated that issuing the subpoena would simply lead [Pickler] to hand over the requested items to them,” the order stated. “Alternatively, they might have simply expected to be granted the opportunity to inspect or create an inventory of the items.”
