Kevin Costner Finds Power in Narrative and Holiday Spirit Post-Divorce
For Kevin Costner, narrative creation extends far beyond simple entertainment.
“Narratives possess the power to mend, to enlighten, and to serve as a mirror for our ideal selves,” the 70-year-old Costner divulged exclusively to Us Weekly on Tuesday, November 11, during The Art of Elysium Presents Lee Daniels’ Vision of Heaven Gala, held at the Rosewood Miramar in Montecito, California.
The former Yellowstone star added, “Frequently, acts of profound courage are depicted onscreen, occasionally in the most subtle forms. Upon witnessing such acts, we acknowledge them, prompting us to consider, I should emulate that. We understand the inverse. Yet, cinema sometimes presents moments where we recognize words we wished we’d uttered, and that we still have the opportunity to express.”
Costner engaged with Us as The Art of Elysium, a charitable group committed to fostering recovery and inspiration via artistic endeavors, introduced Lee Daniels’ Heaven 2025: Heaven Begins Within, a unique, single-evening immersive art event.
Kevin Costner Recounts His ‘Devastating’ Separation From Former Spouse Christine Baumgartner
Beyond discussing with Us how narratives have played a role in his personal journey, Costner also shared his intentions for the approaching festive season, which has taken on a new complexion since his split from former spouse Christine Baumgartner. He disclosed his dedication to creating cherished moments with his offspring. (Costner is father to Cayden, 18, Hayes, 16, and Grace, 15, with Baumgartner, 51, in addition to Annie, 41, Lily, 39, and Joe, 37, from his previous marriage to Cindy Silva, and Liam, 28, with former partner Bridget Rooney.)
“I believe that in their younger years, certain activities were more customary and recurring,” the Dances With Wolves actor clarified. “Presently, the effort involves coaxing them back from university or managing arrangements. … You understand, simply assembling everyone. Consequently, I strive my utmost to infuse as much warmth as possible into the occasion.”
Costner further confessed to longing for the festive customs his family previously observed.
“As an unattached individual, I find myself missing those charming activities, you see, which means I must exert extra effort to ensure those elements are present for them to reflect upon and cherish,” he elaborated.
Baumgartner initiated divorce proceedings against Costner in May 2023, following almost 19 years of marriage, citing irreparable breakdown as the grounds for separation. The former couple achieved an agreement in September 2023, with the divorce becoming final in February 2024. Costner and Baumgartner consented to shared parental responsibility for their offspring, while the Academy Award recipient was mandated to provide the accessories designer with over $63,000 monthly for child support.
“The paramount concern is truly the kids,” Costner informed People in June 2024, referring to navigating their contentious divorce. “One simply proceeds. You maintain communication, you continue to guide [the children], you remain attentive to their interests.”
Kevin Costner Over Time: Unions, Films, 'Yellowstone' and Beyond
Costner has cautiously entered the realm of romance after his divorce. In August, several confidential sources exclusively informed Us that he was involved with filmmaker and writer Kelly Noonan Gores.
“Their interactions are informal, and they were introduced by mutual acquaintances,” a source revealed. “They have been fostering a connection and meeting informally when circumstances permit.” (Us contacted representatives for Costner and Noonan Gores for a statement at that point.)
Baumgartner, for her part, has also progressed. She accepted a proposal from financier Josh Connor in January, and the couple exchanged vows at the Santa Ynez Ranch in Santa Barbara, California, in October.
