Kevin Spacey Addresses "Homelessness" Claims in Instagram Video
Kevin Spacey is setting the record straight regarding his widely reported remarks about being currently unhoused, several years after various sexual assault accusations surfaced against him.
“Hello everyone. Typically, I don't involve myself in correcting media reports; if I did, it would consume all my time,” the 66-year-old Spacey stated in his Instagram video posted on Sunday, November 23. “However, given the recent stories asserting my homelessness, I feel compelled to address this. Not for the media's benefit, but for the countless individuals who have contacted me over the last few days, offering accommodation or simply inquiring about my well-being.”
He further elaborated, “To all of you, let me begin by expressing my genuine gratitude for your immense kindness, period. Nevertheless, I believe it would be dishonest to let you think I am truly homeless in the common understanding of the word.”
Spacey clarified that this “misconception” originated from a recent conversation with The Telegraph, during which he mentioned residing in “hotels and Airbnbs and relocating for work,” a lifestyle reminiscent of his early career days in show business.
“I have been continuously employed throughout this past year, and for that, I am deeply thankful. Furthermore, as we are all aware, numerous individuals genuinely experience homelessness, residing on streets or in vehicles, or grappling with dire financial circumstances, and my empathy is with them. However, it is evident from the article itself that I do not fall into that category, nor did I intend to imply otherwise,” he stated, asserting that the headline was “inaccurate.”
He ended by saying, “I will now allow you to resume your daily routines. I appreciate you taking a few moments to listen, for humoring me, and for all the compassion you've extended. Thank you. Until next time.”
Spacey's caption for the video read, “With gratitude.”
Prior to Spacey's video address, the performer had disclosed in an interview with the U.K. publication that he had forfeited his residence in Baltimore, Maryland, “due to the exorbitant expenses incurred over the past seven years. My income has been minimal, while expenditures have been considerable.”
A previous headline summarized Spacey's situation as having 'No Home,' and 'Living in Hotels' following sexual assault claims.
Spacey remarked that his financial state was “unfavorable.”
“I reside in hotels, I stay in Airbnbs, I move to wherever professional opportunities arise,” he stated. “I genuinely lack a permanent residence, which is what I'm trying to convey.”
“One manages to cope,” he commented in the article published on Wednesday, November 19. “In peculiar respects, I feel like I've returned to my beginnings, simply pursuing work wherever it was available. All my belongings are in storage, and I anticipate that eventually, should circumstances continue to improve, I will be in a position to choose a new place to establish myself.”
In 2017, Anthony Rapp alleged that Spacey made an unwelcome sexual overture towards him in 1986, when Rapp was 14 years old. Subsequently, Spacey was removed from Netflix’s House of Cards and numerous other productions.
Half a decade later, Spacey was absolved of responsibility in a $40 million sexual assault civil action filed by Rapp. By 2023, a U.K. jury acquitted Spacey of all charges in a sexual assault trial involving claims made by four different individuals.
