During the 49th AFI Life Achievement Award Gala in April 2024, Urban stated onstage, “We wed in June 2006, and just four months into our union, my unresolved addictions … utterly demolished our marriage.” He continued, “A mere four months into matrimony, I spent three months in rehabilitation. I was completely uncertain about our future … and if you wish to witness genuine love in practice, I suggest experiencing something similar.”
Urban disclosed that Kidman assisted him in overcoming “every critical thought” and consistently “opted for affection.”
“And here we stand this evening, 18 years subsequently,” he enthused.
By September 2025, Us Weekly verified the couple's split after nearly two decades of marriage. Kidman initiated divorce proceedings just one day afterward, on September 30, attributing their separation to “irreconcilable differences.”

Kidman remarked in November 2009 that she had “experienced the routine facets of marriage and fidelity” during her earlier union with Tom Cruise; however, her relationship with Urban presented a different dynamic.
