King Charles III: A Sovereign's Deepest Bonds with His Siblings

King Charles III: A Sovereign's Deepest Bonds with His Siblings

King Charles III signifies more than just the nation's sovereign to his younger siblings Princess Anne, Prince Andrew, and Prince Edward.

Charles was the firstborn of the late Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip. Not long after Charles's arrival in November 1948, the couple expanded their family with Anne in August 1950.

Following the demise of her father, George VI, in 1952, Elizabeth ascended to the throne at 25 years old. During her reign, she welcomed sons Andrew and Edward in February 1960 and March 1964, respectively.

While these four individuals differ in age, they share a profound connection. After Elizabeth’s passing in November 2022, the siblings honored their late mother during her momentous vigil.

When the time arrived for Charles’s coronation in May 2023, his sister and brothers attended the monumental event. However, family tensions emerged concerning Prince Andrew’s association with disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein, culminating in Andrew surrendering his royal title in October 2025, a decision Charles approved.

Is Prince Andrew Still an Active Royal? His Current Standing With the Family

Continue reading to explore Charles’s relationship with each of his siblings:

Princess Anne

Anne and Charles appear to possess the strongest bond among all their siblings, owing to their proximity in age. The brother-sister pair were toddlers when they relocated to Buckingham Palace, subsequent to their mother’s coronation.

As the heir-apparent and the "spare," Charles and Anne’s upbringing seemingly prepared them for their roles within the royal household. Nevertheless, the duo also shares a passion for gardening and equestrian sports. In their formative years, Charles and Anne frequently enjoyed riding horses together. They have attended polo matches side-by-side throughout the years.

Charles and Anne’s close connection was publicly demonstrated as they led their late mother’s procession, with Andrew and Edward following close behind.

Subsequent to Elizabeth’s loss, Anne stood by Charles as he assumed the throne. At his coronation, the Princess Royal undertook the prestigious “Gold-Stick-in-Waiting” duty, a role historically assigned to an individual entrusted with the Monarch’s safety. She also served as Charles’s personal aide-de-camp and rode on horseback behind him and his wife, Queen Camilla.

In Charles’s reign, he appointed both Anne and Edward as counselors of state, meaning they can fulfill constitutional duties on behalf of their brother. After Charles announced his cancer diagnosis in February 2024, Anne, recognized as one of the busiest members of the royal family, continued her royal engagements and substituted for her brother whenever necessary.

Princess Anne was among the royals who stood in for King Charles III at public events following his diagnosis with an unspecified form of cancer in February 2024. She notably deputized for her elder brother as a royal representative at an investiture ceremony at Windsor Castle one day after Charles publicly disclosed his diagnosis.

Prince Andrew

Andrew and Charles may have a 12-year age difference, but that never prevented the brothers from maintaining a close relationship. Over the years, they have frequently appeared at public engagements together.

When Charles married Princess Diana in 1981, both Andrew and Edward served as best men at the royal wedding. Years later, Charles also played matchmaker for Andrew by introducing him to Sarah Ferguson, whom he was married to from 1986 to 1996. The brothers often went on double dates with their then-spouses.

Despite their youthful closeness, Andrew and Charles have experienced a turbulent relationship in recent years. When news surfaced of Andrew’s association with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein in 2020, he stepped down as a working member of the royal family.

Andrew was subsequently sued for sexual assault but ultimately reached a settlement. However, Andrew was stripped of his royal titles by his mother in January 2022. (Charles has never publicly addressed the alleged accusations against his younger brother.)

While Andrew and Charles maintained some distance following Andrew’s scandals, the two were reunited in September 2022 for their mother’s funeral. Andrew joined his siblings as they walked behind their mother’s coffin. Andrew also attended Charles’s coronation in May 2023.

The Epstein scandal resurfaced in October 2025 when multiple U.K. news outlets published alleged emails between Prince Andrew, Ferguson, and Epstein. Specifically, one email sent weeks after the duchess had publicly distanced herself from Epstein reportedly showed her suggesting the convicted sex offender had “always been a steadfast, generous and supreme friend to me and my family.”

A spokesperson for Ferguson informed BBC News: “The duchess spoke of her regret about her association with Epstein many years ago, and as they have always been, her first thoughts are with his victims.”

“Like many people, she was taken in by his lies,” Ferguson’s statement continued. “As soon as she was aware of the extent of the allegations against him, she not only cut off contact but condemned him publicly, to the extent that he then threatened to sue her for defamation for associating him with paedophilia.”

Delving into King Charles III and Prince Edward’s Enduring Fraternal Connection Over the Years

In light of the re-emerged emails, royal insiders indicated that Andrew and Ferguson would likely not be invited to spend Christmas 2025 with the rest of the family.

The controversy culminated in October 2025 when Andrew announced his decision to relinquish his royal title.

“Following discussions with The King, and my immediate and wider family, we have concluded that the continued accusations against me detract from the work of His Majesty and the Royal Family,” Andrew told Us Weekly. “I have decided, as I consistently do, to prioritize my duty to my family and country. I stand by my decision from five years ago to withdraw from public life.”

Andrew concluded: “With His Majesty’s agreement, we feel I must now take an additional step. I will therefore no longer use my title or the honors which have been conferred upon me. As I have stated previously, I adamantly refute the accusations against me.”

Weeks later, Us confirmed that Charles began the “formal” process of removing Andrew’s “styles, titles, and honors.”

Prince Andrew shall henceforth be known as Andrew Mountbatten Windsor. His lease on Royal Lodge has, to date, provided him with legal protection to continue in residence,” Buckingham Palace stated to Us in October 2025. “Formal notice has now been issued to surrender the lease, and he will relocate to alternative private accommodation. These disciplinary actions are deemed essential, notwithstanding his ongoing denials of the allegations against him.”

The royal statement concluded, “Their Majesties wish to make clear that their thoughts and profoundest sympathies have been, and will continue to be, with the victims and survivors of any and all forms of abuse.”

Prince Edward

Despite their 16-year age gap, Charles and Edward appeared to share a strong bond during their formative years. As a teenager, Charles dedicated significant time to Edward and would engage in games with his youngest brother. Edward also frequently attended Charles’s various polo games and would cheer on his elder brother from the sidelines.

In 1999, Edward married Duchess Sophie, whom Charles has maintained a close relationship with over the years.

However, Edward and Charles reportedly experienced a period of strained relations concerning Edward’s production company, Ardent Productions. While Charles’s eldest son Prince William was studying at university in 2001, a member of Ardent’s film crew allegedly attempted to film the young royal. In 2002, Edward stepped down from the company to concentrate on his duties as a member of the royal family. Ardent Productions was dissolved in June 2009.

Charles and Edward found solace together in 2022 following the loss of their mother. Both brothers traveled with their wives to Balmoral Castle in Scotland to be by the queen’s side when she died. However, only Charles and Camilla arrived in time to say goodbye. Edward and Sophie reached Scotland a short while after Elizabeth’s demise.

Upon Charles’s assumption of the throne, he bestowed the title Duke of Edinburgh upon his youngest brother.

The Duke of Edinburgh was one of the few royals to offer a direct statement about King Charles’s health condition following his 2024 cancer diagnosis.

“We were profoundly appreciative of the immense support from all quarters,” Prince Edward shared with the Daily Mail in March 2024. “I am aware he has been deeply moved by it all. He is progressing favorably, and we are hopeful for a very smooth recovery.”
