King Charles III's Unprecedented Reign A Life of Service to the Crown

Before the passing of Queen Elizabeth II, King Charles III held the position of heir to the British crown for seventy years.

He occupied this role for a duration unprecedented by any previous royal successor. During his time awaiting the throne, he dedicated himself to public service as the Prince of Wales. Following his military service and the establishment of his charitable organization, he became engaged to Princess Diana in February of 1981. Their magnificent wedding ceremony took place at St Paul's Cathedral that July. The pair later celebrated the births of their two sons, Prince William in June of 1982 and Prince Harry in September of 1984.

Even after establishing a family, Charles and Diana decided to separate in December 1992. Their divorce was finalized in August of 1996. The prince took on the role of a sole parent to their children after Diana's tragic death at 36 in August 1997, resulting from an automobile crash. Charles eventually wed his future queen consort, Camilla Parker Bowles, in April 2005.

After the passing of Elizabeth II in September 2022, Charles ascended to the throne. His majestic coronation ceremony was held in May 2023 at Westminster Abbey, mirroring the location of his mother's own crowning as queen.
