King Charles scales back cancer treatment and urges early detection in new message.
King Charles III has provided a unique personal commentary on his ongoing cancer treatment, offering insights before the transition into the new year.
A video recording broadcast on Channel 4 on Friday, December 12, featured the 77-year-old monarch discussing his battle with an unspecified form of cancer, roughly two years following the public announcement of his diagnosis in February 2024.
“This time of year naturally prompts us to reflect on gatherings with friends and family. Amidst these holiday celebrations, I wanted to invite you to join me in dedicating a special space in your thoughts, and your prayers for the vast number of individuals throughout the United Kingdom who receive a cancer diagnosis annually — as well as for the millions who offer them support and care,” Charles stated at the outset.
He proceeded, “My personal journey has shown me that receiving a cancer diagnosis can be an immense emotional challenge. However, I am also aware that early identification is crucial for changing the course of treatment, providing crucial time for medical professionals — and for the patients themselves, the essential feeling of hope. These outcomes are within our collective reach.”
King Charles Comments He Feels ‘Reasonably Well’ During Continuing Cancer Treatment
The sovereign stressed that “early detection quite simply preserves lives,” before offering an update on his specific treatment schedule.
“In fact, I am pleased to announce today that due to timely detection, successful medical intervention, and following my physicians' recommendations, my personal cancer treatment regimen will be scaled back starting in the New Year,” he disclosed. “This achievement is a personal relief and serves as evidence of the significant progress made in cancer care recently; evidence which I hope provides inspiration for the half of the population who will receive a similar diagnosis at some point in their lifetimes.”
Charles observed that he has been “deeply touched by what I can only describe as the ‘support network’ surrounding every individual facing cancer,” a community comprising specialists, nurses, researchers, and volunteers. He also urged the audience to utilize the new online national Screening Checker to take preventative action regarding their health.
“As I have previously noted, even the most challenging phases of sickness can be brightened by exceptional kindness. However, kindness must be accompanied by concrete action. This December, as we contemplate the past year, I hope that we can all commit, as part of our goals for the coming year, to contribute to the efforts to detect cancer early,” he finalized. “The wellbeing of yourself — or a loved one — might rely on it.”

Since his diagnosis became public knowledge, Charles has consistently voiced appreciation for the medical staff who have supported him through his recovery process. Furthermore, he has utilized his personal experience to advocate for cancer research and patient assistance initiatives.
Buckingham Palace confirmed in a release that the new video was filmed at Clarence House in the preceding month. The initiative supports Stand Up To Cancer 2025, a collaboration between Channel 4 and Cancer Research UK. Aided by the King's endorsement, these two organizations aim to educate the populace on preventative screenings and the vital role of early diagnosis. Following the King's address, a live segment featuring television host and cancer survivor Davina McCall was broadcast.
Following a hospital visit for a standard procedure in January 2024, Buckingham Palace issued a statement one month later confirming his diagnosis. The February 5 statement noted: “During The King’s recent stay in hospital for treatment related to benign prostate enlargement, another condition requiring attention was observed.” It added that “subsequent medical evaluations determined a type of cancer.”
The King has generally kept details of his medical care confidential since the initial disclosure early last year, yet he has consistently expressed a positive outlook on his health. “I wish to convey my deepest appreciation for the numerous messages of encouragement and well wishes I have received over the past few days,” he communicated immediately after announcing his diagnosis.

When conversing with a patient, he remarked, “I am reasonably well,” as reported by Hello! Magazine.
In October 2024, Charles interrupted his medical regimen while undertaking a 10-day tour of Australia and Samoa alongside his spouse, Queen Camilla. He recommenced treatment upon his return, which persisted into the subsequent year. Several months later, Buckingham Palace released a statement indicating he was briefly admitted to the hospital again.
The confirmation of Charles's illness preceded the public announcement of his daughter-in-law Princess Kate Middleton's cancer diagnosis by one month. Following chemotherapy, she revealed she was in remission exactly one year later. Her Instagram post on January 14 stated: “It is a source of relief to be in remission now, and my focus remains firmly on full recovery.”
