Kristen Bell's Initial Hesitation Over Dax Shepard's Friendship With Ex Revealed
Dax Shepard revealed that his spouse, Kristen Bell, initially struggled to accept his ongoing camaraderie with his former partner, Briegh Morrison.
Speaking to Morrison on the October 21st 'Mom’s Car' portion of his 'Armchair Expert' podcast, the 50-year-old Shepard recounted, “At the outset of Kristen's and my relationship, you were still a frequent visitor since my mother resided at my place. You were present even within the initial couple of months of us dating.” He continued, “Her initial reaction was, ‘This is quite unconventional. I don’t maintain friendships with any of my former partners; I don’t socialize with them at all.’ And my response was, ‘I'm generally on good terms with all of mine.’”
He elaborated, “Eventually, she became entirely comfortable and completely accepting of the situation.”
Shepard confessed that he had doubted his ability to forge another profound bond with someone else following his separation from Morrison.

“While the separation was manageable, I must admit, for a period, I genuinely believed, ‘I’ll never experience that type of love with anyone again,’” he stated. “I harbored a profound apprehension. I thought, ‘I don’t believe I’ll ever truly feel for anyone else what I felt for Briegh.’ That truly frightened me.”
Morrison concurred that their parting was notably challenging, largely due to her conviction that she and Shepard were destined for a lasting future after years of courtship and joint life planning.
“Among the most difficult aspects of our split was my firm expectation that we would start a family,” Morrison shared. “We had purchased a home. This was going to be the life I desired. I was reaching an age where it felt important.”
She maintained a close bond with Shepard’s mother throughout their relationship and contacted her after their separation, although she ultimately “wished to avoid offending Kristen.” Shepard conceded he felt “adrift for some time” after the breakup, but extended his best wishes to Morrison. He characterized both himself and Morrison as individuals who “maintain friendships with former romantic partners.”
The former Punk’d star's existence transformed upon his initial encounter with Bell, 45, at a social gathering in 2007. Their paths intersected once more two weeks subsequent at a Detroit Red Wings ice hockey match, where a shared Michigan heritage forged a connection between them. Shepard proposed marriage to Bell in 2009, following a two-year courtship. Their first daughter, Lincoln, currently 12, was born in 2013, and they exchanged vows in the same year. Their second daughter, Delta, now 10, joined their family in 2014.
Bell and Shepard are widely recognized for their openness and directness concerning their partnership, with Bell recently facing criticism for an anniversary message featuring a contentious remark attributed to her spouse. The former star of The Good Place ultimately grew to accept the notion of Shepard sustaining his friendship with Morrison.
“A quality that you both possess, which I deeply appreciate, is that I believe, more than anyone else I’ve encountered, you hold your beliefs and stances, yet you are truly capable of hearing another perspective, reflecting on it, and incorporating it,” Shepard commented, referring to Morrison and Bell. “Neither of you are rigid in your thinking. You are highly adaptable. … for me, this is an essential characteristic.”
