Laura Dern Announces Passing of Legendary Actress and Mother Diane Ladd

In a poignant announcement, acclaimed actress Laura Dern shared the news of her mother, the legendary Hollywood figure Diane Ladd, passing away at 89 years old.

“My extraordinary hero and the deepest gift of a mother, Diane Ladd, peacefully departed with me by her side this morning, at her Ojai, California residence,” Dern, 58, conveyed in a heartfelt message released to The Hollywood Reporter this past Monday, November 3.

Dern's statement further elaborated, “She embodied the finest daughter, mother, grandmother, actress, artist, and a compassionate soul that felt almost too perfect to be real. We were profoundly fortunate to share our lives with her. She has now ascended to join her angels.”

The specific cause of her passing was not disclosed at the time of the announcement.

Ms. Ladd's daughter, Laura, was from her marriage to actor Bruce Dern, a union that lasted from 1960 to 1969. The couple also mourned the loss of another daughter, Diane, who tragically passed away at 18 months old following a drowning incident in 1962.

The esteemed Oscar-nominated actress built a remarkable career, celebrated for her indelible performances in films such as Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore (1974), Wild at Heart (1990), and Rambling Rose (1991). Her television credits were equally impressive, including the 1980 series Alice, Enlightened from 2011 to 2013, and Chesapeake Shores, which she graced from 2016 until 2022.

Laura Dern had previously spoken candidly about her mother's health challenges throughout the years, notably sharing that Ms. Ladd had been given a prognosis of just six months to live in 2019 after developing a serious lung condition.

“She was unknowingly exposed to neighborhood pesticides and subsequently discovered scarring on her lungs,” Laura recounted during a Today show interview in April 2023, while conversing with host Hoda Kotb. “The medical advice was, ‘If you can encourage her to walk and increase her lung capacity, it might make a difference.’”

Laura elaborated that she and her mother had established a routine of regular walks, aiming to aid her recovery from the condition. The esteemed Marriage Story actress took the thoughtful step of recording these conversations, intending for her children, Ellery, 24, and Jaya, 20, to later cherish the open dialogues between their mother and grandmother.

“I was genuinely surprised by how few questions I had posed to her,” Laura confessed. “Especially about the difficult subjects, as I worried about causing her pain by bringing them up. But even the everyday things. Despite being raised by an actor and having worked closely with my mother, I had never inquired, ‘What inspired you to pursue acting? … Which film first captivated you? What is your preferred color?’”

This profound period ultimately led the mother-daughter pair to co-author a book, Honey, Baby, Mine: A Mother and Daughter Talk Life, Death, Love (and Banana Pudding), following Ms. Ladd's remarkable survival of the health crisis.

“We commenced these walks in early 2019, at a time when they predicted, ‘Your mother won't be with us in six months,’” Laura recounted. “However, through those walks and a refusal to accept that prognosis, as my mother told [Kotb], ‘They say they’re practicing medicine, so I won't just trust one doctor; I'll consult several and continue to fight using alternative treatments and the powerful love my daughter and I share.’”

In January 2023, Ms. Ladd shared with People magazine that “the profound act of listening filled us both with immense love and proved to be deeply healing.”

“As parents, we often withhold certain truths from our children, driven by a desire for their love and respect,” Ms. Ladd mused to the publication, reflecting on the profound insights gained from their walks. “So, in essence, we embellish slightly. What became clear to me was that there were aspects of my life I had kept from her, believing they would burden or guilt her. Yet, the revelation of these stories proved to be a liberation for her instead.”
