LeBron's Anthem Moment Sparks Debate and Golf Comparisons
Los Angeles Lakers icon LeBron James faced criticism for appearing to rehearse his golf motion during the performance of the national anthem prior to his team’s Christmas Day matchup against the Houston Rockets.
ESPN’s cameras captured James, 40, swaying rhythmically as he stood alongside his teammates for “The Star-Spangled Banner.” While some fans found the moment amusing, others reacted negatively to what they perceived as a display of disrespect.
“And as usual, showing disrespect for our national anthem,” one fan commented in the remarks section of the video, which ESPN shared via TikTok on Thursday, December 25.
“The most unlikable athlete in history,” another asserted.

“Precisely why he will never be considered the greatest. SO DISRESPECTFUL,” a third wrote, as others also contributed to the discussion regarding James’ legacy and comparisons to Michael Jordan as the most accomplished player ever.
The Rockets secured the victory in the game, 119-96, and James did not publicly address the controversy.
As James’ basketball career nears its conclusion, he has taken up golf as a new hobby. He revealed to Spectrum Sportsnet Live in September that he has “become captivated.”
“The fascination is genuine,” he stated. “I was previously unfamiliar with the sport. People said that if you ever engage with the game and it captures your interest, it’s all-consuming. I certainly feel that way, man.”

James added, “I believe the most valuable aspect I’ve gained from it, beyond the competitiveness and difficulty, is the mental challenge, which I appreciate anything that tests my mental fortitude. It also allows you to disconnect from the world. You’re out there on the green, without your phone. My phone remains in the cart throughout the round. I check it periodically. But it’s just like when I listen to music, I’m out there with my friends. You’re immersed in the game. I can become completely absorbed in the sport of golf.”
James has also garnered the support of his fellow players, who appear delighted to share the course with the four-time MVP.
“You know what, I’m simply glad my friend is out there. It’s been a long time coming,” Boston Celtics star Jayson Tatum said in a video posted via X by the NBA in July. “Part of it is you have to venture out, develop a passion for the game. We all probably looked like this when we first started. But hopefully, you continue to practice and he’s only going to improve from here.”
The Golden State Warriors’ Stephen Curry wasn’t as generous, playfully mocking James’ swing in July during a celebrity tournament in Lake Tahoe, Nevada.
“Rookie initiation,” Curry, 37, described it in an interview with Nevada SportsNet. “He got his initial few swings in. I spoke with him last week and he told me how much enjoyment he had.”
“You know, there’s definitely room for improvement with that swing, though,” Curry added. “That’s kind of the look I was going for. He’s got a solid build and a good foundation, and if he dedicates some time to practice and receives some coaching, he has potential for sure. So, I’m eager to see it.”
