Lisa Niemi Reflects on Patrick Swayze's Final Days and Family Legacy

Patrick Swayze left behind his wife and siblings following his unfortunate passing.

Swayze, widely recognized for his leading roles in Dirty Dancing and Ghost, succumbed to pancreatic cancer in September 2009 at the age of 54.

“He was quite direct when he initially received the diagnosis, turning to me and stating, ‘I’m going to die,’” Swayze’s spouse, Lisa Niemi, shared during a 2024 appearance on the “Amy and T.J.” podcast. “I wasn’t particularly knowledgeable about pancreatic cancer, but he was, and from what he understood, a diagnosis typically meant a very short prognosis.”

She elaborated, “Indeed, the physician advised, ‘You can certainly pursue treatment and be as aggressive as you desire, but it would be wise to organize your affairs sooner rather than later.’”

Swayze and Niemi shared a marriage of 34 years prior to his death.

“It inevitably brings back memories that are, you know, not entirely pleasant,” Niemi noted at the time. “I empathize with those who are fighting for someone they cherish. And to do so with a disease that lacks adequate resources is disheartening. It’s as if, ‘Yes, we all must eventually depart, but please provide us with a fighting chance.’”

Patsy and Jesse Wayne Swayze

Patrick’s mother, Patsy, passed away in September 2013 at 86 years old, nearly three decades after her husband’s death. (Jesse Wayne experienced a fatal heart attack in 1982 at the age of 57.)

“He served as the cornerstone upon which our family was built,” Patrick recalled of his father in his The Time of My Life memoir, published posthumously in 2010. “A consistent and stable presence in our lives. In many respects, we were nurtured more by my father than by my mother.”

Don Swayze

In addition to Patrick, Patsy and Jesse Wayne had four other children. Their eldest son was Don, who is also an actor. His filmography includes All Saints Day, Where the Wind Blows, On Swift Horses and Sons of Thunder.

Vicki Lynn Swayze

Patrick’s sister Vicki Lynn died in 1994 at the age of 45.

“Her passing profoundly altered my life,” the late actor told the Daily Mail in 2005. “It was difficult not to feel a sense of responsibility, as if I could have done something to prevent it. I needed to discover something to believe in, beyond myself, to overcome the guilt and blame I felt – particularly concerning Vicky’s situation. The only course of action in those circumstances is to find some form of meaning. You must … honor the spirit of the person you have lost for as long as you live.”

Sean Swayze

Brother Sean died in December 2025 at the age of 63 following complications stemming from liver disease. A death certificate obtained by TMZ confirmed that Sean’s cause of death was an acute upper gastrointestinal bleed and severe metabolic acidosis resulting from cirrhosis of the liver, which is frequently linked to excessive alcohol consumption.

Bambi Swayze

Patsy and Jesse Wayne adopted daughter Bambi after welcoming their four older children.

“My] younger siblings, Donny, Sean, and Bambi, also experienced the constant pressure to excel in any activity they pursued,” Patrick wrote in his book. “We referred to it as ‘growing up Swayze’ – an almost relentless drive to be the best, accomplish the most, and lead the way.”

Lisa Niemi

Patrick and Niemi were wed from 1975 until his 2009 death. Three years later, Niemi began a relationship with jeweler Albert DePrisco and they married in May 2014.

“Patrick remains a part of my life. I still maintain a connection with him,” Niemi stated on the “Amy and T.J.” podcast in 2024, defending her decision to remarry. “He’s not physically present, [but] every day he’s with me and I feel his presence. I genuinely fell in love with Albert, and … it was fascinating to observe how it didn’t diminish my affection for Patrick in the slightest.”
