Court filings secured by ABC News in March 2019 indicate that the pair purportedly “consented to remit a total of $500,000 in illicit payments to secure their two daughters’ designation as recruits for the USC crew team — notwithstanding their lack of involvement in the sport — thus aiding their acceptance into the University of Southern California.” While Loughlin and Giannulli’s daughters, Bella and Olivia Jade, were enrolled at the institution, Us Weekly verified in October 2019 that they had subsequently withdrawn.

Within hours of the scandal's public disclosure, Giannulli was apprehended, subsequently released on a $1 million bail. The prominent When Calls the Heart actress, at the time, was reported to be “abroad” and was apprehended the subsequent day. Her bail was also established at the sum of $1 million. They initially entered not guilty pleas to accusations of fraud and money laundering, ultimately accepting a plea agreement and serving custodial sentences.
