Louis Tomlinson Questions One Direction Reunion Appropriateness After Liam Payne's Death

Louis Tomlinson and his fellow former One Direction bandmates have not contemplated a possible reunion following the untimely passing of Liam Payne.

“One should never completely rule it out, but I question if it would be appropriate out of respect for him,” Tomlinson, age 33, commented during the “Diary of a CEO” podcast episode released on Wednesday, October 8. He continued, “Hypothetically, if 25 years from now, similar to an Oasis situation, they present us with an incredibly lucrative offer, urging us to ‘Return and perform X number of concerts.’ I’m uncertain.”

Tomlinson stated that Payne’s passing “entirely halted any discussions or plans regarding that.”

“It’s ironic because Liam was the most ardent advocate for a One Direction reunion,” Tomlinson remarked. “I’d consider myself the next keenest.” (Tomlinson and Payne gained prominence in 2010 as part of 1D, alongside Harry Styles, Zayn Malik and Niall Horan. The ensemble began an indefinite break in 2016, a year after Malik, currently 32, departed the group.)

The Enduring Bond Between Liam Payne and Louis Tomlinson

Payne passed away in October 2024 at 31 years old, after a deadly plunge from a balcony in Argentina. Beyond suffering severe fatal injuries, Payne’s post-mortem examination showed various substances in his body. (Payne had battled with drug addiction and had undergone rehabilitation therapy on several occasions over the years.)

Regarding Tomlinson, he was operating his vehicle in Los Angeles when he received word of Payne’s demise.

“Niall informed me,” Tomlinson stated, referring to their ex-One Direction colleague. “I experienced a similar sensation to when I lost [my sister] Félicité, and I believe anyone feels this when they are close to someone who is battling issues: ‘My utmost effort wasn’t sufficient.’ It’s then that my own presumption makes me think I could have truly assisted, but the problem was far more profound than anything I could have offered him. He was certainly going through a difficult period in his life.”

Tomlinson’s sister, Félicité, passed away from an accidental overdose when she was 18, two years after their mother, Johannah Deakin, succumbed to leukemia at 42.

“I was astonished by the sheer misfortune our family had endured. Perhaps it isn't entirely rare, but at that moment, I harbored resentment towards life and for my loved ones,” Tomlinson expressed on Wednesday. “I wasn't questioning, ‘What did I do to bring this upon myself?’ Instead, it was more about [my younger sisters] Daisy and Phoebe being so young, along with Lottie. They’ve already faced so many hardships. Why this particular trial, and why at this juncture? It truly felt remarkably, remarkably unjust.”

Tomlinson elaborated that he had been “concerned” for Félicité in the months before her passing and at first “couldn’t accept” her absence.

“Experiencing the loss of my sister in that way, even though I recognized it wasn’t my fault, left me with profound guilt,” he recounted. “I felt helpless, and I felt as though I had failed both my sister and my mother. My mother had told me during the final weeks of her life, ‘You must promise me you’ll care for your sisters.’ I responded, ‘Yes, you know, naturally I will,’ and she added, ‘Especially Félicité, as you know she is delicate.’”
