Magic Johnson Credits Wife Cookie as His "Closest Confidante" and "Jackpot"
When it comes to matters of the heart, Earvin “Magic” Johnson believes he hit the jackpot with his wife, Cookie Johnson.
“Beyond being my spouse, she is also my closest confidante,” Magic, 66, revealed exclusively to Us Weekly at the HollyRod Foundation’s 2025 DesignCare Gala on Saturday, October 4. “Cookie embodies a nurturing spirit; she looks after me, our children, our grandchildren, and her entire circle of friends. Her devout faith is a true gift.”
Their paths first crossed as incoming students at Michigan State University during the late 1970s. The couple exchanged vows in September 1991.
“Our journey together spans 47 years, with 34 of those spent in marriage,” Magic said. “We also collaborate professionally. She encompasses every aspect of my life.”

Last September, Magic and Cookie, 66, commemorated their marriage milestone by sharing a private midday meal at the Bel Air Hotel, joined by a select group of dear friends, including Sugar Ray Leonard and actress Vanessa Calloway.
On that occasion, the couple conveyed their appreciation for their enduring romance, which deepens with each passing year.
“I cherish the unique and genuine nature of our affection, I relish every shared experience, and I can't imagine it any other way,” Cookie posted via Instagram on September 14, “To our everlasting devotion!!”
Magic also remarked, “An exquisite commemoration. The cuisine was superb, the presentation remarkable, and the outdoor setting truly splendid! It rendered our 34th anniversary unforgettable!”
Prior to attending the yearly philanthropic gathering hosted by their dear friends, Holly Robinson Peete and Rodney Peete — an initiative that garners support for individuals affected by autism and Parkinson’s disease — Cookie took a moment to recall the initial stages of her relationship with Magic.
“What captivated me, I believe, was Earvin's inherent gentility. He possessed impeccable manners,” she shared with Us at NYA EAST in Los Angeles. “Even during our university years, he consistently demonstrated courtesy, like opening doors. He always treated me with kindness. He indulges me immensely. And that particular quality has always commanded my respect.”
Furthermore, she holds her spouse in high esteem for his diligent work ethic and his unwavering resolve.
“Should he encounter a setback, he promptly recovers, directs his gaze ahead, and strategizes a solution from that point,” Cookie exclaimed. “While others might remain despondent, lamenting, ‘Why did this happen? Why me?’ He, conversely, states, ‘It's over. We progress. Let's find a way.’”
Although Magic and Cookie gladly spoke highly of one another, they were equally delighted to commend Holly, 61, and Rodney, 59, for their charitable endeavors through the HollyRod Foundation.

“We feel truly fortunate to have such a close relationship with them,” Magic conveyed to Us. “Our admiration for Holly and Rodney, their values, and their contributions to the community is immense, and we remain grateful for their friendship.”
Cookie further stated, “[Holly] is not merely a fundraiser; she is actively involved on the ground. She diligently assesses situations. She assists in determining the most effective allocation of funds. Witnessing the progress she has fostered with her son [RJ] and his remarkable advancements? It truly exemplifies their profound compassion and dedicated efforts.”
