Mandy Moore Finds Gratitude Amidst Fire and Fury
Actress Mandy Moore is expressing profound gratitude.
“This past year has presented significant challenges and unexpected turns, yet my primary emotion is one of immense thankfulness,” stated the 41-year-old “This Is Us” star in an Instagram caption shared on Thursday, November 27. “Wishing you and your loved ones a joyful Thanksgiving. I am most appreciative of these four individuals.”
Accompanying her contemplative message, Moore posted three monochrome images depicting her in a living room, sharing laughter with her spouse, Taylor Goldsmith, and their three children: sons Gus, aged 4, Ozzie, aged 3, and daughter Lou, who is 14 months old. One of the snapshots showed Lou playfully moving on the ground.
In the early part of the year, Moore and her loved ones faced the imminent threat of losing their Altadena, California residence to the Eaton wildfire, a part of a sequence of destructive blazes that ravaged the Los Angeles area in January. The fires led to the displacement of roughly 180,000 individuals and resulted in the destruction of over 16,000 buildings.

Through an Instagram post on January 8, Moore disclosed that the “primary section” of her abode had “astonishingly” survived the Eaton fire. Nevertheless, she clarified that the property was “uninhabitable,” and her husband, Goldsmith, 40, saw his music studio destroyed.
“Our garage and separate back dwelling were incinerated. All our acquaintances suffered total losses. Every residence on our block vanished. My in-laws. My brother and sister-in-law — just six weeks away from welcoming their inaugural child. Our dearest companions,” she penned back then. “Experiencing a strange form of survivor’s guilt. Our affection for this neighborhood runs deep, and we are committed to assisting in its reconstruction and offering aid. I appreciate everyone who reached out to us and extended assistance. Altadena remains resilient.”
Moore subsequently disclosed that the house eventually required demolition.
“Attire, furnishings, virtually all possessions will need to be discarded … potentially even the structural walls,” she conveyed in February. “We anticipate a lengthy absence from the property as both it and the surrounding area undergo assessment, cleanup, and the commencement of reconstruction. I share these details because I am finding this period challenging.”
Moore further elaborated, “It is self-evident that our precious children and animal companions are our utmost priority, and home is defined by our togetherness … however, possessing a haven and secure environment for stability also holds significant importance.”
By May, a visibly exasperated Moore utilized her Instagram Stories to express her grievances regarding the arduous reconstruction efforts.
“My appreciation to LA County for rendering the post-fire rebuilding process as exasperating and insurmountable as can be,” she stated. “While it shouldn’t astonish me, the bureaucratic obstacles and incessant requirements they impose upon us all are truly perplexing.”
Acknowledging that her original statement might have seemed “somewhat unclear” given her “intense anger,” Moore subsequently clarified, “It’s infuriating and devoid of compassion … the incessant formalities and pointless procedures LA County is demanding from fire survivors striving to reconstruct their lives. Didn’t California pledge to simplify this process? We had ONLY completed renovations in November, and being back at the starting point is already sufficiently devastating.”
Concurrently with her challenges in reconstructing her home after the fire, Moore also publicly criticized a driver involved in a hit-and-run incident who collided with the back of her family’s vehicle in August.
“To the individual who struck my family’s car from behind and then fled the scene as we stopped, I hope you face the consequences,” she posted on Instagram then. “Fortunately, all occupants were unharmed, but what sort of person behaves in such a manner?”
