Mario Lopez Reveals Injuries and Cutting-Edge Longevity Treatments
Mario Lopez has consistently prioritized fitness throughout his life, but at 52, the demands on his body are becoming apparent.
“I’ve experienced recurring injuries over the past few years,” the Access Hollywood host exclusively revealed to Us Weekly.
While Lopez enjoys playing golf, he naturally gravitates towards demanding, explosive activities like jujitsu and boxing, which Dr. John Layke of the Beverly Hills Plastic Surgery Group explained to Us have “taken a toll on his joints” over time.
“I’ve sustained a torn rotator cuff. I’ve also torn both of my biceps muscles. And I’ve injured my Achilles tendon,” Lopez shared. “It’s been quite a challenge.”
Mario Lopez Discusses Why Maintaining Health and Fitness Is Crucial for Him Now
Ultimately, Lopez found himself needing multiple surgical interventions, which restricted his range of motion. He expressed a desire to avoid further operations, prompting a friend to introduce him to Layke, who, along with other physicians and scientists at Proactive Longevity, developed a personalized plan for the Saved by the Bell star.
Initially, Lopez underwent a therapeutic plasma exchange, designed to eliminate heavy metals, microplastics, and inflammatory cholesterols from his system, among other substances. He will also receive natural killer cell therapy to target and eliminate cancerous or infected cells, as well as intravenous and intra-articular injections of Muse stem cells and exosomes to facilitate repair and regeneration within his body.
“[The plasma exchange] wasn’t particularly uncomfortable,” he told Us. “You simply relax for a couple of hours, then receive an intravenous infusion. It’s comparable to an oil change. The material expelled is surprisingly dense. It’s quite remarkable.”
Lopez is still undergoing preventative treatments but is already experiencing improvements and “training diligently” at the gym once more.
“I’ve made significant progress,” he exclaimed. “I’m genuinely enthusiastic about exploring these options. While I tend to be traditional in my approach, I’m certainly embracing this modern perspective.”

The TV host further emphasized the importance of his mental well-being, stating, “I feel unsettled and anxious if I don’t manage to break a sweat early in the morning. I experience stress and restlessness.”
Layke assured Us that he is “completely confident” that his patient will “experience improved well-being, recover more quickly, and minimize the risk of future injuries” upon completion of the treatments.
Throughout his health difficulties, Mario has been able to rely on his wife, Courtney Lopez, with whom he shares three children: daughter Gia, 15, and sons Dominic, 12, and Santino, 6.
“She’s been incredibly supportive,” he told Us. “She encouraged me to slow down a bit. She was concerned about any serious setbacks. It’s been a good balance so far. I’ve promised her I’ll be more cautious. She’s pleased that I’m prioritizing my health and well-being.”
Dominic and Santino have also provided support for their father, who noted, “I’m eager to return to jiujitsu. I practice it with my sons as well – Muay Thai and similar activities.”
Mario Lopez: 25 Things You Might Not Know About Me
Despite being on the path to recovery, Lopez’s injuries have altered his perspective on aging.
“It makes you realize your own mortality,” he admitted. “Even though I feel psychologically and mentally youthful – I still maintain a sense of vitality – my body presents a different story. You simply need to listen to it and be sensible, because I still have that drive to push myself.”
Mario told Us he hopes to maintain fitness and health for as long as possible.
“I believe that as you age, being in shape is the ultimate achievement, to be honest, and maintaining good health is essential,” he explained. “Physical fitness is a testament to self-respect, dedication, work ethic, and discipline. Your body reflects your habits. Your health should always be your top priority.”
