Mark Ruffalo Recounts How He Saved Woody Harrelson from a Bar Brawl
Mark Ruffalo recounts the incident where he intervened to stop his former castmate Woody Harrelson from engaging in a bar brawl.
“We were filming Now You See Me entirely outdoors in New Orleans. It was utterly chaotic,” Ruffalo, 57, shared on the Tuesday, October 14 installment of Harrelson, 64, and Ted Danson’s “Where Everybody Knows Your Name” podcast. “We were shooting scenes with telephoto lenses, being pulled into establishments mid-take, almost as if it were the height of Mardi Gras.”
During their stay in The Big Easy, Ruffalo and Harrelson ended up in a bustling venue where the actor from The Hunger Games was spotted by an admirer.
“One evening, we were out in a very crowded spot. A woman approached him and exclaimed, ‘Oh my God, I adore you so much.’ Woody gently placed his hand on her arm and replied, ‘Oh, thank you. Thank you, sweetheart,’” Ruffalo remembered. “Then, a man stepped in, pushed her aside, and then jostled Woody.”

Danson, having been acquainted with Harrelson since their collaboration on Cheers, appeared to anticipate the direction of Ruffalo’s narrative.
“Oh, terrible. Awful,” Danson, 77, commented. “Unfavorable.”
Ruffalo concurred, stating that Harrelson’s “initial instinct isn't to push someone back, but rather to instantly strike them in the face.” Ruffalo quipped that under different circumstances, Harrelson’s reaction might have been “appropriate,” prompting Harrelson to chuckle.
After the confrontation, Ruffalo elaborated that “a complete commotion erupted” in the establishment, a detail Harrelson also recalled.
“I seized you and extricated you,” Ruffalo recounted. “Because I thought, ‘This might be entertaining, but it could also escalate dramatically because while you and I might manage, the others in our company … I doubt they would.’”
Danson admitted he didn't believe he could have acted decisively as Ruffalo did.
“I'm ashamed to admit I would have been the one to say ‘I'll return shortly, I'll contact someone,'” he joked.
