Mark Sanchez Family Issues Statement Amid Assault Allegations and Victim's Charges

The family of former NFL quarterback Mark Sanchez issued a statement two days following the alleged assault of a 69-year-old delivery driver in downtown Indianapolis.

“This period has been profoundly unsettling for all parties involved. Mark and our family are deeply thankful for the outpouring of care, affection, and solidarity shown to us recently,” Nick, Mark’s brother, communicated to TMZ in a statement released on Monday, October 6.

Nick further stated, “Mark is still receiving medical attention for the significant injuries he suffered and is concentrating on his recuperation while the legal proceedings unfold. We wish to express our sincere appreciation to the emergency personnel and healthcare providers.”

As Us Weekly had earlier conveyed, the former NFL quarterback is accused of assaulting the driver during an altercation in an alleyway situated between the Westin Hotel and the Indianapolis Marriott Downtown, occurring just after midnight on Saturday, October 4.

Based on court records acquired by Us, the driver informed law enforcement that he believed Mark, aged 38, was “attempting to end his life.” Upon reaching a nearby pub after the event, police found Mark with several knife wounds on his upper body and the elder individual with facial lacerations. Detectives indicated that the man was gathering spent cooking oil between the pair of hotels when Mark, appearing inebriated, confronted him.

According to the documents, Mark informed the man that he had conversed with hotel officials and stated that his vehicle should not be parked there. Security camera footage shows Mark entering the driver’s side of the truck. The two individuals walked around the truck before the encounter escalated into violence close to a refuse bin.

In his statement to police, the man asserted that he initially deployed pepper spray against Mark, subsequently drawing a knife and injuring the athlete in an act of self-preservation.

By Sunday morning, October 5, Marion County prosecutors had officially filed three misdemeanor charges against Mark: battery causing injury, public inebriation, and unauthorized entry into a motor vehicle. He was apprehended at the medical facility, then transferred to jail, and subsequently freed on a $300 cash bail. By Monday, one of his charges had been elevated to a level 5 felony, potentially leading to a prison sentence of up to five years.

A judicial proceeding is set for Tuesday, October 7.

Us has contacted Mark’s legal representatives to solicit their statement.

Following the purported assault, the driver’s family — opting to remain unnamed — presented vivid images of his wounds to the Indiana news source FOX59. They reported that the man, who sustained a significant cut across his cheek that penetrated his tongue, is “on the mend but deeply affected.”

Mark had prior stints with the Philadelphia Eagles, Dallas Cowboys, and Washington Redskins before concluding his professional football career in 2019. He presently serves as a Fox Sports commentator and was slated for a television appearance during the Sunday-night game pitting the Indianapolis Colts against the Las Vegas Raiders.
