Martin Sheen Reveals the Real Reason He Changed His Name

While Martin Sheen is widely recognized, the acclaimed actor recently shared insights into his long-standing decision to use a professional alias rather than his given name.

From childhood, Sheen, whose parents immigrated from Ireland's County Tipperary and Spain's autonomous community of Galicia, harbored a strong desire to pursue acting.

“I used to visit the cinema and be completely captivated,” he recounted to Closer Weekly in June 2022. “James Dean was among my inspirations. I always felt like an actor, rather than someone who learned to act. I instinctively understood the performances I saw on screen, though I couldn't express it. Upon graduating high school, I promptly moved to New York.”

Sheen's acting career commenced in 1956. He is renowned for roles in films such as Badlands, Apocalypse Now, and Wall Street, alongside television series like The West Wing and Murphy Brown. The performer disclosed that the moniker by which he is commonly known differs from his official birth name.

What Was Martin Sheen's Original Name?

Born Ramón Gerard Antonio Estévez on August 3, 1940, Sheen shared that his father initially opposed his aspirations to become an actor.

“His reaction was understandable. My parents were both immigrants,” Sheen clarified to Closer. “My father originated from Spain, and my mother from Ireland. My actual name is Ramon Estévez. My father held practical views, having worked in a factory for the majority of his adult life, and wished for me to attend college to secure a more prosperous future than his own. This led to several very difficult discussions between us.”

The Rationale Behind Martin Sheen's Stage Name

Sheen elaborated on the reasons for taking on a professional alias after relocating to New York City post-high school.

“When I arrived in New York in 1959, honestly, I found it challenging to assert a Spanish background due to the significant bias against the Puerto Rican population; despite being Americans, they were often perceived as new immigrants in New York City, and this community faced considerable hardship,” Sheen shared with Daily Actor in February 2012. “Today, naturally, they are a deeply woven part of the city’s fabric. However, when I began, they encountered discrimination, and I experienced considerable pressure from being associated with that community.”

The former cast member of The West Wing added, “Certainly, my pride remained undiminished, yet I was equally apprehensive about the potential impact on my efforts to forge a career in New York City, which led me to essentially create a new persona: Martin Sheen.”

Regarding the origin of the first name in his celebrated alias, Sheen stated, “I adopted ‘Martin’ from the sole industry contact I had back then, Robert Dale Martin, who provided me with significant encouragement. He was a casting director at CBS, and after my initial audition for him upon arriving in New York, he proved to be very supportive.”

His chosen surname, Sheen, was derived from Bishop Fulton J. Sheen, “who served as the Auxiliary Bishop of New York during that period and was a highly prominent televangelist, if you like. He pioneered successful televised evangelism. In the 1950s, he hosted a popular primetime television program titled ‘A Life is Worth Living,’ and he truly was a remarkable individual.”

Has Martin Sheen Officially Altered His Name?

Sheen verified that he never formally changed his name.

“My name was never officially changed, and truthfully, it never will be,” he informed Daily Actor, also noting that just one of his offspring chose to use the Sheen stage name. (Martin has children Emilio Estevez, Ramon Estevez, Charlie Sheen, and actress Renée Estevez with his wife, Janet.)

“Charlie opted for Sheen, driven by the desire to perpetuate my professional identity and avoid being professionally dissociated from me,” Martin stated. “I felt equally honored by his decision.”

The Reason Charlie Sheen Was Absent for Daughter Cassandra's Birth

All of Martin’s children embarked on careers in Hollywood, with Charlie and Emilio particularly achieving significant fame in the 1980s. Martin commended Emilio's choice to retain his given name, even when facing industry pressure.

“On one occasion, I was performing in a show when Emilio appeared. I presumed he was there for a visit, but he had actually secured a role in the very same production,” Martin recounted to Closer. “My sole impact on Emilio was encouraging him to maintain his name. When he began his career, his agent recommended he switch to Sheen, but he refused. I’m grateful he didn’t.”

In his autobiography, The Book of Sheen, Charlie detailed that his decision to use Sheen coincided with the start of his collaboration with manager Glennis Liberty.

“I informed her I would be using Sheen as my surname, and observing her type the letters of my new identity onto a fresh page, I was truly pleased with its appearance,” Charlie penned. “The previous week, I had met with Pop and received his approval for the name change. This Estevez-to-Sheen transformation was far more amicable between father and son than the experience Dad had endured with his own father. I conveyed to him the significance of honoring him by continuing the name.”

He added, “Given that Emilio was already an active actor using Estevez, it felt entirely logical that two of his sons would represent both sides of our family heritage.”

However, for Charlie, whose academic performance and school attendance were poor prior to his pivot to acting, adopting a stage name held significance beyond mere appearances.

“What I withheld from Pop: Employing the name Sheen enabled me to put a definitive end to the recent academic and athletic setbacks I associated with Estevez,” he revealed. “I wasn’t embarrassed by the name, but if this was to be a new beginning with fresh opportunities, I desired a different identity when referred to.”

Martin Sheen Shared His Regret Regarding His Professional Name

Martin confided to Closer that one of his "regrets" was not retaining his birth name upon entering the world of entertainment.

“Occasionally, one is swayed when lacking sufficient foresight or even the bravery to uphold one's convictions, leading to later repercussions,” he mused. “However, naturally, I speak only for myself.”

Martin’s official legal records still bear his birth name, as the actor informed Closer, “I never formally altered my name. Ramon Estévez remains on my birth certificate, my marriage license, my passport, and my driver’s license.”
