Mary Cosby Returns to RHOSLC Unintentionally Hilarious and Heartfelt

Following a brief hiatus from The Real Housewives of Salt Lake City, Mary Cosby has returned, more amusing than ever — despite her own unawareness. Her unassuming demeanor is precisely what elevates her to the status of an understated champion on the Bravo show and secured her recognition on Us Weekly’s prestigious Reality Stars of the Year roster.

Audiences of Bravo have also witnessed a complete turnaround regarding 52-year-old Cosby, an initial member of the RHOSLC cast who briefly stepped away (skipping the reunion and any farewells) post-season 2 because of disputes concerning her ministry. She asserts that this pause was crucial after her church was labeled a “cult” in the wake of the show’s inaugural season.

“It was imperative for me to step away and reassess the circumstances, as I honestly didn't — surprisingly — comprehend the full scope of what I was embarking upon with this show,” Cosby shares in an exclusive interview with Us Weekly. “I hadn't grasped the extent of the disarray it would entail.”

The Faith Temple Pentecostal Church was established in 1968 by Mary’s grandmother, Dr. Rosemary Redmon Cosby. After her passing, Mary assumed the responsibilities of first lady and evangelist, serving alongside her husband, Robert Sr., the church’s presiding bishop.

The scrutiny directed at her church and her marriage (Robert Sr. having been Cosby’s stepgrandfather prior to their 1998 wedding) constituted the “most challenging” and “bleakest period” of her initial appearance on RHOSLC. Cosby attributes this conjecture to having “originated from” her former castmate, Jen Shah.

“She disseminated that information, and subsequently, others embraced and amplified it,” Cosby asserts, observing that her conflict with Shah was an inherent “consequence” of participating in the series, a matter she has since “released.”

“I simply came to realize that this constituted a segment of my life’s path,” Cosby clarifies. “Once you possess sufficient resilience, you encounter certain tribulations. A particular transformation, a certain period of adversity, much like my experience, because I managed to navigate it, I managed to cope with it, and I was prepared, although I wasn't aware of it then.”

The friction between Cosby and Shah (sparked when Cosby remarked that Shah “smelled like a hospital”) during the debut season of the show significantly contributed to RHOSLC becoming a subject of widespread discussion almost instantly following its November 2020 debut. (Shah is presently serving a prison sentence subsequent to her 2023 conviction for fraud.)

Following Cosby’s hiatus in the third season, she rejoined the cast as a “friend of” in season 4, appearing more reserved, famously opting to skip an evening of festivities to enjoy McDonald’s solitary in the Sprinter van. However, upon her full-time return for season 5, her sharp humor resurfaced powerfully.

Nevertheless, according to Cosby herself, she doesn't consider herself a humorist.

“I am completely unaware of my comedic nature. I persist in not perceiving myself as funny. I even observe my own actions and find myself laughing,” she confesses, elaborating that “everyone in my family possesses humor,” yet she believed she had not inherited that trait.

“My disposition is serious. I am straightforward. I am candid. My objective is to arrive at the desired point in my life, and I aspire to experience life to its absolute fullest,” she continues. “I wasn't aware that I evoke laughter in others. So, am I humorous? I remain unsure of my comedic ability.”

Beyond her accidental comedic timing, Cosby’s reappearance on the series also fostered an unexpected yet deeply cherished friendship with Angie Katsanevas. Cosby remarks that their connection stands as “likely one of the joys of participating in the program,” despite indications that some strain may develop between the two as season 6 progresses.

“Discovering camaraderie among women is beneficial in our world, in a broad sense,” Cosby elaborates. “I sense that individuals have simply altered, particularly since COVID. People exhibit heightened anxiety. There's simply increased pressure; they're [more irritable].”

She further states, “People aren't actively seeking companions, nor are they striving to be a friend to the extent of familial closeness, and such connections are simply no longer common.”

Cosby’s interactions with her family have also consistently struck a chord with the audience. In season 5, it came to light that her 22-year-old son, Robert Jr., was struggling with drug addiction. The emotional exchange between mother and son was captured by Bravo cameras, garnering widespread acclaim for Cosby's empathetic, rather than indignant, reaction.

“That information genuinely, profoundly surprised me,” she remembers upon hearing of Robert Jr.’s difficulties. “I instantly began to hold myself accountable, reasoning, ‘It's not my place to pass judgment on him, his existence, or his decisions.’”

Regarding her ability to remain composed, Cosby clarifies, “I do not subscribe to the practice of evaluating others. I simply am not one to critique. I dislike judging individuals, and I refrain from doing so. … If he is sufficiently candid to confide something of such significance, then why would I criticize? My only recourse is to be present, to absorb it, to embrace it, and to trust that I can provide assistance.”

Cosby informs Us that her poignant discussion with Robert Jr. has elicited “considerable response from viewers,” yet there is a singular source she “consistently” turns to for support amidst challenges.

“I require divine assistance for that particular kind of backing and aid to see me through,” she articulates. “For my tribulations, challenges, and life’s progression are immensely, vastly more significant than I often portray, thus necessitating superior guidance.”

What is Robert Jr.’s current status?

“I can truthfully state that he is performing exceptionally well,” Cosby reveals to Us, disclosing that her son “experienced a minor regression” not long ago. Yet, she is praying for him to “maintain his progress.”

The Real Housewives of Salt Lake City is broadcast on Bravo every Tuesday at 8 p.m. ET. Past installments are available for streaming at your convenience on Peacock.
