Meghan Markle's Family Responds to Her "Profound Loss of Self" Interview

A regal predicament unfolds! Meghan Markle's estranged father, Thomas Markle, and her half-sister, Samantha Markle, have publicly voiced their opinions about her since her romance with Prince Harry began in 2016.

Just recently, Thomas and Samantha criticized Meghan again following her comments regarding their consistent public statements about her during a CBS interview in March 2021. In that conversation, the former Suits actress shared, “I carry a lot of sorrow. By that, I mean, I've lost my father. I experienced the loss of a child. I almost lost my public persona. Essentially, there's a profound loss of self.”

Thomas retorted in an interview with Good Morning Britain, stating, “She has largely cut off all her family, both from her mother’s lineage and my own. Therefore, she truly had no one to contact. She would have had our support if she had maintained a connection. Everyone makes errors.”

Samantha, meanwhile, discussed her connection with Meghan during an Inside Edition interview, which followed the Duchess's revealing CBS broadcast. “Suffering from depression doesn't justify treating individuals like disposable objects and casting them aside,” she declared.

Meghan dedicated little of her CBS interview to elaborating on her connection with her father or half-sister. In an additional segment from the conversation, she lauded her mother, Doria Ragland, remarking that her mother “maintained quiet composure for four years witnessing my ordeal,” a reference to the onslaught of criticism from the British press, Thomas, Samantha, and the general public.

The former working royal asserted that the palace failed to safeguard her from these assaults. Indeed, she accused the royal establishment of “spreading untruths” concerning her and Harry, 36, pointing to a narrative that suggested she caused Duchess Kate to weep prior to her May 2018 nuptials. Meghan claimed in the interview that it was, in fact, the Duchess of Cambridge who brought her to tears, further stating that Kate offered an apology later, but the palace neglected to correct the public narrative.

Thomas fathered Samantha and his son, Thomas Markle Jr., during his initial marriage to Roslyn Loveless, which concluded in 1973. He married Ragland in 1979, and she, a yoga instructor, welcomed Meghan into the world two years subsequent. Thomas and Ragland formally separated in 1987. The Markle family has maintained a distant relationship with the Duchess of Sussex for an extended period.

Meghan’s difficult bond with her father worsened significantly after she gave birth to her son, Archie, in May 2019, and her daughter, Lili, in June 2021, without notifying him of these pregnancies. In December 2025, Meghan’s brother, Thomas Jr., confirmed that their father had been admitted to a hospital in the Philippines for urgent surgical intervention.
