Mel Gibson and Rosalind Ross to Part Ways After Eight Years Together

Mel Gibson and Rosalind Ross are ending their relationship before the year 2025 concludes.

“Although it’s sad to bring this chapter of our lives to a close, we are blessed with a beautiful son and will continue to prioritize being the best parents possible,” Gibson, 69, and Ross, 35, communicated in a joint statement via People on Tuesday, December 30, when announcing their separation.

According to the publication, the couple quietly separated approximately a year ago, but have committed to co-parenting their 8-year-old son, Lars.

Us Weekly has reached out to Gibson’s representative for comment.

Gibson met Ross through mutual acquaintances in 2014 and began dating shortly thereafter. They welcomed their first child together in 2017, just days before Gibson celebrated his Oscar nomination for Best Director thanks to his work on Hacksaw Ridge.

“What could be more thrilling than listening to the nominations being announced while holding my newborn son,” Gibson said in a statement at the time. “This is a truly wonderful honor.”

In addition to Lars, Gibson has eight older children, including daughter Hannah and six adult sons, Christian, Edward, William, Louis, Milo and Thomas, with former wife Robyn Moore. He also has a 16-year-old daughter, Lucia, with ex Oksana Grigorieva.

At the beginning of 2025, Gibson and Ross experienced a devastating loss when their residence in Malibu, California, was destroyed in the Los Angeles wildfires.

The actor was out of town working at the time, but his family and their animals were safely evacuated.

“The good news is that those in my family and those I love are all well, and we’re all happy and healthy and out of danger,” he shared on the January 9 episode of NewsNation’s Elizabeth Vargas Reports. “That’s all I can care about, really.”

Since then, Gibson has been working on The Resurrection of the Christ, which is the follow-up project to his 2004 biblical drama The Passion of the Christ. The film is anticipated to be divided into two films, with Part One arriving in theaters on March 26, 2027, while Part Two will launch 40 days later on Ascension Day, which falls on May 6, 2027.

“Mel is among the greatest directors of our time, and this project is both deeply personal to him and the ideal showcase for his talents as a filmmaker,” Lionsgate Motion Picture Group chair Adam Fogelson previously shared when announcing the project. “My relationship with Mel and [producer] Bruce [Davey] spans 30 years, and I am delighted to be partnering with them again on this landmark event for audiences.”

While Gibson has celebrated success in Hollywood, the actor and director has also offered a glimpse into his private world as a father.

In November 2016, the Oscar nominee stated he considers himself a good, involved father, but acknowledges he’s far from flawless.

“As a parent, everyone makes mistakes,” he told The Sunday Times Magazine. “There’s no such thing as a perfect parent and it’s so easy to err. But hopefully I’ve erred less than most.”
