Mel Gibson Reflects on Fatherhood and Steps Out with His Youngest Children

Mel Gibson has been candid about the challenges of raising children over the years.

The actor is the father to nine children with three former partners, and has openly acknowledged making errors while raising his seven sons and two daughters.

“Being a parent, everyone makes mistakes,” Gibson stated during a 2016 interview. “There’s no such thing as a flawless parent and it’s incredibly easy to falter. But hopefully I’ve made fewer mistakes than most.”

Gibson’s comment came shortly before his ex-partner, Rosalind Ross, gave birth to the actor’s youngest son, Lars, in January 2017. Gibson and Ross were in a relationship for nine years before they announced their separation in December 2025.

“Although it’s disheartening to conclude this chapter in our lives, we are blessed with a wonderful son and will continue to be the best parents we can be,” the former couple shared in a joint statement to People at the time.

Robyn Moore

Gibson married his first wife, Robyn Moore, in 1980, just three years after they first met. The couple welcomed seven children during their marriage, which ended in 2006. Moore initiated divorce proceedings in 2009, and their marriage was officially dissolved two years later.

Hannah Mae Brobst

Gibson and Moore welcomed their oldest child, Hannah, in November 1980. She has contributed behind-the-scenes work on several of her father’s films throughout his career, including The Patriot and What Women Want.

Hannah married guitarist Kenny Wayne Shepherd in 2006 and they are now parents to six children.

Christian and Edward Gibson

Gibson and Moore’s twin sons, Christian and Edward, were born in June 1982. Christian currently works as a camera operator in Los Angeles. Edward, however, has not pursued a career in the entertainment industry and prefers to maintain a low profile. Instead, Edward owns a company called Natural Edge — based in Los Angeles — and creates furniture from reclaimed wood slabs imported from Fiji.

Will Gibson

Gibson continued to expand his family with Moore by welcoming son Will in 1985. He prefers to maintain a private life, avoiding public attention despite his famous family background.

Louie Gibson

Three years later, Gibson and Moore welcomed Louie. He has since launched a career in filmmaking, directing several horror movies.

Louie married actress Annet Mahendru in 2016 after she appeared in one of his films.

Milo Gibson

Milo, who was born in November 1990, has followed in his father’s footsteps and decided to pursue acting. (He previously worked as a massage therapist and electrician.)

“It’s quite frightening to make that kind of change,” Milo told People in 2017 regarding his acting career. “But one day it struck me that I don’t want to be 50 and regret not trying something I’m passionate about.”

Thomas Gibson

Gibson and Moore welcomed their youngest son in April 1999. He has chosen to keep his personal life private following his parents’ separation.

Oksana Grigorieva

Following his separation from Moore, Gibson began a relationship with Russian musician Oksana Grigorieva. They were together for approximately a year and welcomed one daughter together.

Following their 2010 split, Grigorieva and Gibson experienced a period of conflict, including a lengthy legal dispute after Grigorieva accused her former partner of domestic violence. Despite denying her allegations, Gibson was investigated by the Los Angeles Police Department and in March 2011 pleaded no contest to a misdemeanor battery charge. Gibson and Grigorieva resolved their legal battle by August of that year.
