Melanie Watson, 'Diff'rent Strokes' Actress, Dies at 57

Diff’rent Strokes actress Melanie Watson has passed away. She was 57 years old.

TMZ reported on Sunday, December 28th, that Watson died two days earlier in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Her brother, Robert Watson, informed the outlet that Melanie had been hospitalized due to internal bleeding, adding that her condition worsened.

Melanie, who utilized a wheelchair, was born with Osteogenesis Imperfecta. The Cleveland Clinic defines this disorder, also known as Brittle Bone syndrome, as a connective tissue disease that causes bones to be fragile, resulting in fractures with minimal or no force.

Melanie portrayed Kathy Gordon in Diff’rent Strokes, appearing in four episodes of the show. The sitcom aired for eight seasons, from 1978 to 1986.

Years later, Melanie reflected on her role in the series with Indie Wire, admitting she wasn’t always an easy child to manage.

“I was quite difficult. I was constantly playing with my yo-yo and listening to my Walkman,” she said. “Back then I didn’t require a wheelchair, so I was carried everywhere.”

Melanie recalled that the manual wheelchair she used would frequently become entangled in cords across the set, but she noted that the crew members were helpful. During her second appearance on the show, Melanie’s character appeared on crutches to demonstrate her ability to walk – something she wasn’t particularly enthusiastic about.

“I really didn’t want to do that,” she said, explaining that a few years prior to filming she experienced a fall that made her hesitant about walking again. “I felt like it was somebody else’s dream.” But she was told that this was the concept of the episode.

Melanie’s mother encouraged her to proceed with the scene, which she ultimately did. In the end, Melanie expressed gratitude to Norman Lear for taking the opportunity to showcase a different way of life to viewers.

“I’m proud of Norman for challenging conventions and doing something different,” she said. “I didn’t realize at the time what a valuable opportunity it was to be the first to do it. If I could relive those years, I would have remained in the entertainment industry.”

After leaving Diff’rent Strokes, Melanie dedicated her time to assisting others living with disabilities. She was also the founder and director of Train Rite, an organization that trains dogs to support individuals with disabilities, according to her IMDb profile.

IMDb also indicated that Melanie was married to Robert Bernhardt from 1994 to 1996.

Melanie pursued a run for public office in 2020, attempting to secure a seat in the Colorado State Senate before her campaign had to be “halted abruptly” due to “unexpected health issues.”

“My campaign isn’t financially robust, but I’m not running to accumulate wealth. I am running because I want to create positive change,” she wrote on Facebook at the time. “Change that will improve and enrich the lives of those in this community, as well as throughout our state. Let’s make it happen!”

She intended to run again in 2025. “Hello Everyone!” she wrote on Facebook in 2024. “I’m eager to begin work on my 2025 campaign! Time is of the essence! My platform is established, and I’m ready to hear your thoughts and concerns.”
