Mia Farrow Mourns Diane Keaton Acknowledging Their Complex Woody Allen Connection

Mia Farrow has publicly commented on the unexpected passing of Diane Keaton, given their intricate past.

Farrow, aged 80, expressed her sentiments about Keaton on Instagram this past Saturday, October 11, stating, “She was an incredibly talented actress — and an extraordinary, captivating individual.” She added, “My condolences go out to her children and sisters. May Diane rest peacefully.”

A representative for Keaton confirmed her demise at 79 years old, requesting “privacy” for the Academy Award recipient’s family this Saturday; however, no formal specifics have been disclosed. (Keaton leaves behind two children, her daughter Dexter and son Duke, both adopted during her 50s as a single parent.)

Farrow and Keaton shared an extensive background, intertwined by their professional and private connections with the actor-director, Woody Allen.

Allen, currently 89, was romantically involved with Keaton — and also her sisters Robin Keaton and Dory Keaton — during the 1970s. Diane subsequently appeared in multiple comedic films by the director from that decade, earning an Academy Award for Best Actress for her part in Allen’s 1977 feature, Annie Hall.

Their romantic connection ended by the late 70s, yet they maintained a strong friendship and continued to work together. Farrow then became Allen’s leading lady in his films, beginning with 1982’s A Midsummer Night’s Sex Comedy, which consequently led to their own lengthy romantic involvement.

Over their twelve-year partnership, Allen and Farrow welcomed two adopted children, a daughter named Dylan and a son named Moses. Additionally, they had a biological son, Ronan. (Farrow is also a mother to eleven other children.)

Farrow ended her relationship with Allen in 1992 upon learning of his liaison with her adopted child, Soon-Yi Previn. (Allen and Previn tied the knot in 1997 and have two children together.)

During the ex-couple’s widely reported custody dispute in 1992, their daughter Dylan alleged that Allen had assaulted her at the age of 7. Dylan reiterated these allegations in a 2014 New York Times opinion piece and once more in HBO’s 2021 four-part documentary series, Allen v. Farrow. Allen has consistently and vigorously rejected these claims and was never criminally indicted.

Keaton remained supportive of Allen following the controversy, informing More magazine in 2014 that the allegations made by Dylan did not affect her bond with the director.

At that point, she stated, “I am Woody’s companion, and I have maintained this friendship for 45 years.” She affirmed, “And absolutely nothing will alter that.”

In the same year, Keaton received the esteemed Cecil B. DeMille Award, honoring lifetime achievement, for Allen at the Golden Globes ceremony. (Allen has notably opted not to participate in Hollywood awards events since the 1970s.)

Jane Fonda and Fellow ‘Book Club’ Actors Honor Diane Keaton After Her Passing

As Dylan’s allegations against Allen gained renewed attention during the #MeToo era, Keaton posted on Twitter in 2018, expressing her faith in the director. Keaton also provided a link to Allen’s 1992 “candid” interview on 60 Minutes, where he refuted claims of abusing his daughter.

She posted on X (previously Twitter), “Woody Allen is my acquaintance, and I still have confidence in his account. It might be beneficial to review the 60 Minute interview from 1992 and form your own opinion.”

On her side, Mia informed The Hollywood Reporter that she never harbored ill will towards performers who opted to collaborate with Allen subsequent to Dylan’s allegations becoming public.

Diane Keaton's Romantic Relationships Over Time

In September 2024, she stated, “I fully comprehend an actor’s decision to engage in work with him.” She added, “I am not someone who would assert, ‘They ought not to.’”

Following Keaton’s passing, numerous past colleagues — such as actors from Father of the Bride, Book Club, and The First Wives Club — offered their respects to her remarkable Hollywood career.

Goldie Hawn posted on Instagram this Saturday, conveying, “Diane, we are unprepared for your absence. You’ve bequeathed us a shimmering path, abundant with luminous fragments and recollections beyond compare. How do we bid farewell? What expressions can emerge when one’s heart is shattered? You always eschewed accolades, so modest, but now you cannot tell me to ‘be quiet’ darling. There existed, and will always exist, no one quite like you.”

“It is difficult to fathom…or to come to terms with…Diane’s departure,” Jane Fonda remarked. “She consistently radiated vitality and brilliance, perpetually chuckling at her own eccentricities, displaying boundless ingenuity…in her performances, her attire, her writings, her companions, her residences, her collection of books, her global outlook. She was truly distinctive. And, though she might not have realized or acknowledged it, indeed, she was an excellent performer!”

Keaton’s professional journey in the film industry spanned almost six decades, culminating in her last cinematic appearance in the 2024 comedy, Summer Camp.
